Aberdeen expansion leads to a brighter future

Aberdeen is a year away from being the biggest development in Scotland, Europe almost, according to Marlene Mitchell, business development manager Aberdeen Harbour.

“Aberdeen South is a fantastic development and from our perspective it is a game-changer as it gives us many opportunities to expand our business. As a deepwater alongside port it means vessels that previously sailed passed can now be accommodated,” she explained.

“We already have 11 bookings for the new port to complement our existing cruise business in Aberdeen North Harbour which allows us and the destination to hone our products, processes and service delivery as we continue to grow our cruise business.”

Aberdeen South Harbour is due to be completed in summer of 2020. The multimodal port has identified the Balmoral Quay as the primary berth for cruiseships, which is close to the port exit and extensive road network to manage passenger flow efficiently.

At almost 900 years, Aberdeen Harbour Board is the oldest continuously working business in the UK. This year there are just under 30 calls to Aberdeen North with ships such as Gann, Corinthian and Sea Cloud 2 being regular visitors. Independent travellers can walk into the city centre and the crew are very close to facilities.
