Kristiansund – Floating in the Atlantic Ocean (c) Per Kvalvik

Kristiansund

Kristiansund is situated at the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean, spread out on four main islands with a charming harbour in the middle. The town is known for opera and clipfish (bacalao), with its own clipfish museum. The harbour boat Sundbåten is a great way to experience the town from the seaside. The tiny island Grip is also worth visiting. The scenic Atlantic Ocean Road is only 30 min. drive away.
Kristiansund is a small but experienced cruise port with 25–30 yearly cruise calls from February to November, attracting mainly small and mid-sized cruise ships. The port is located close to the main shipping lane between Ålesund and Trondheim. Cruise ships berth directly in the town centre, only steps from shopping, restaurants, cafés and attractions. You can walk easily everywhere. Kristiansund is well suitable for winter cruises. An annual opera festival goes on for 3 weeks in February, ideal for a themed cruise in combination with Northern Lights in the north.

Port attractions

  1.  The Atlantic Ocean Road

Visit the spectacular Atlantic Road and combine this tour with Kvernes stave church, Håholmen viking island or the mesmarizing marble caves. The road is just a 30-min. drive away and takes you right out to the ocean's edge, running across an archipelago of small islands and islets. Include a stop at the scenic walkway to really experience the salty and refreshing surroundings.

The wharf was used for productuon of clipfish (bacalao, dried and salted cod), which became important in the development of Kristiansund from the 18th century and to the post-war period. A visit here will challenge all you senses: see, hear, toch, smell and taste!
