This June the supervisory board of Port of Tallinn approved the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering terminal at Muuga Harbour.

A contract for constructing a small-scale LNG receiving and distributing terminal to Muuga Harbour’s Eastern part is therefore expected to be signed with Vopak EOS.

“The exact schedule for the construction depends on the cooperation with the local government, Joelahtme municipality, which is hearing the project matter. According to current plans, the construction of the terminal is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of 2017”, said Remo Holsmer, chairman supervisory board, Port of Tallinn.

Holsmer confirmed that Muuga Harbour, which is year around navigable, is the best suitable location for the LNG terminal in Estonia. “The construction of the LNG terminal improves significantly Estonia’s position in the Baltic Sea region as only few harbours in the region offer possibilities for bunkering LNG.

In the first phase it is planned to construct the LNG terminal with the maximum capacity of 4,000m3. The terminal’s whole territory covers an area of about 8,500m2.
