Runavik invests in major quay extension

Runavik in the Faroe Islands is extending its quay at King’s Harbour from 101m to 320m with a depth of 12m. Work will start this year for completion in 2017. While this will cater to all port users such as the oil and fishing industries, it will also mean that larger cruiseships can call.

There were four calls last year and three are scheduled this: Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam on July 25 and Phoenix Reisen’s Albatros on May 21 and September 6.

The harbour is well protected from bad weather - being used both by the King of Denmark and the Vikings - and has benefited from calls that were diverted from Klaksvik due to poor weather. However it is keen to attract more ships that are targeting it for a specific call. “We want to service the ships in a good way so we don’t just want the big ships,” commented Rannva Troest, marketing coordinator Port of Runavik.

Runavik is connected by sub-tunnel to Klaksvik and in three years’ time there will be a sub-tunnel which will make the drive to capital Torshavn just 15 minutes.

There is plenty on offer for both those wanting organised shore excursions and independent travellers. Cultural events in the town centre include live music by local musicians, an outdoor market with souvenirs and wool wear as well as the Faroese Chain Dance with dancers wearing the national costume performing the traditional dancing and singing.

A tourist information desk is situated both at the port and in the town centre. Free shuttle buses are available on request and security is in line with ISPS regulations.
