"A new 300m-long multipurpose quay will be completed in June 2019." These words are something that Port of Ronne cruise manager, Niels Lundberg, has been looking forward to announcing for a very long time. Now the port expansion is a reality and the rumour about its new quay is fact.

Lundberg is part of a cruise-threesome consisting of Peter Juhl, cruise coordinator at Destination Bornholm and Gitte Holmsberg, who works as a shipbroker at BHS Shipping. Together they are making sure the industry knows what the Danish island Bornholm in the Baltic Sea has to offer passengers.

Lundberg commented: "The first barrier is often that they do not know where Bornholm is geographically located. Our next step is to tell that in a very short time (June 2019), we will have a new 300m multipurpose quay and a 11m water depth as well as a significantly improved manoeuvring room, which makes our harbour able to accommodate the big cruiseships, up to about 350m”.

The hard work is showing results. "We have risen from 20 cruiseships in 2016 to 26 in 2017. The estimate for 2018 is 45 but of course there is always an uncertainty margin with estimates and the figures are changing constantly," Lundberg said.

Calls have already been received for 2019 and 2020 because of the port expansion and new quay. “Of course the numbers are uncertain, but it means that the development goes in the right direction. We are getting a good deal in the market and the rumours about the launch of the port expansion are certainly beneficial to our opportunities.”

Cruise Network Bornholm is the next step on the cruise road: "I look forward to execute and develop this network in collaboration with other internal and external partners, so we are ready to receive the increasing number of tourists.”
