The Port of A Coruna has just closed a historic year in cruise traffic. A total of 184,069 passengers visited the city last year, 45% on 126,735 in 2016. The 2017 figure also exceeds by about 15,000 the passengers forecast at the beginning of the year, which highlights the boom that the sector is experiencing. Among the 120 calls, there were six inaugural calls as well as 22 days with two or more vessels calling.

“These results reflect the fruits of almost a decade's work focused on promoting a sector with great potential,” commented Maria Garcia-Carro de la Colina, head of commercial unit Port of A Coruna. “It is estimated that the economic, return generated by the average expenditure of the 250,000 passengers and crew registered last year, amounts to €15m.”

The proximity of the A Coruna wharfs to the city centre, connected by a new pedestrian space, and the remodelling of the Marina and the Parrote as well as the quality of the service, the scenic attractions and the gastronomy have been the aspects most valued by passengers. “The latest surveys indicate that more than 80% give a remarkable score to the destination and I would recommend it as cruise call”.

Forecasts for 2018 focus on maintaining the leading level of 2017 with 100 calls and 170,000 estimated passengers.
