A public private partnership (Provincie Noord-Holland, City of Amsterdam, Port of Amsterdam) co-financed by the European Union to improve maritime access to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has been put in place.

Construction of a sea lock is expected to begin in 2015 which will enable larger vessels of up to 340m and 52m beam to call the city. It is expected to be operational in 2019.

At the eighth annual Amsterdam Cruise Port breakfast during Cruise Shipping Miami in March, reference was made to the growing river vessel business which showed a 30% increase for 2013 on 2012. Meanwhile cruiseship calls dropped for the first time in a decade.
