It’s all new in Narvik next year

All 11 calls to Narvik next year will be from ships that have not visited before. The number is also over three times that of this year’s three calls.

The town centre is being rebuilt with the addition of a 3,000m2 War Museum, also a library and tourist information centre. The work is due to be completed at the beginning of 2016. In addition discussions are taking place on building a quay and terminal in the city centre for 2016. Owned by the port, two to three architectural options are on the table.

The present quay is much further away and requires shuttle buses although people do walk the mile into the centre. The current piers 1 and 2 are too small for the larger ships although can accommodate expedition-type ships. Consideration is being given to filling out the landmass between the finger piers to build the quay,

As far as shore excursions are concerned, exclusivity is being added to the mix, for example a small group can socialise with the wolves at the wildlife Polar Park and learn how to howl. A visit to Tinja Mountain Lodge on the road between Narvik and Sweden means passengers can visit two countries in a day and experience gourmet food and beer from a microbrewery. New this year are kayaks.
