On April 30, 2016, AIDA Cruises’ newbuilding AIDAprima began sailing year-round from Hamburg. She is the first cruiseship in the world to be operated using LNG when at berth in ports visited on the ‘metropolis cruise’.

"We believe in LNG as being the cleanest fossil fuel,” said Felix Eichhorn, president AIDA Cruises. "I am convinced that our path is also a clear signal to the ports and LNG producers to invest in the necessary infrastructure.”

Full test runs have taken place in Hamburg, Southampton, Le Havre and Zeebrugge while
preparations and initial permit procedures for Rotterdam are still underway. This is mainly due to it having a different set of requirements being right in the city centre, according to AIDA. LNG trucks will ensure the supply of LNG to AIDAprima.

In contrast to the use of traditional marine diesel containing 0.1% sulphur, emissions will be significantly reduced when using LNG. The emission of sulphur oxide and soot particles will be completely prevented. Nitrogen oxide emissions will be reduced by up to 80% and carbon dioxide emissions by 20%.
