Thursday 5 April 2018 – It is 5:00 a.m. and it has been busy the last few hours at the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden. Pilots, Tugboats, Harbor master, Boatmen and a team of KVSA employees are ready for a big reception. “We are extremely happy and honored to receive the MSC Magnifica”, says Ron Maes, general manager of the Felison Cruise Terminal. It is a very special occasion today”. Not only does the Felison cruise Terminal welcome two cruise ships simultaneously, but with the arrival of the MSC Magnifica we receive our largest cruise ship ever”. The MSC Magnifica measures 294 meters in length, 32 meters in width and is almost 60 meters high. “It is the first time that a ship of this size will dock in IJmuiden”, says Maes. With the help of the Pilots and Tugboats, Captain Laccarino manages to dock safely into IJmuiden despite the strong winds that accompanied her from Zeebrugge. On this particular cruise, there are 3,095 passengers on board for a European tour. With the ship docked, the terminal crew come into action and proceed to connect the gangway. They have been preparing the terminal for the reception of the passengers and crew since 03:00 this morning. Meanwhile the exiting passengers from the ship are guided to the coaches that are lined up on the quay. From there they drive to various tourist attractions, such as ‘Zaanse Schans’, Keukenhof’, Amsterdam or Haarlem. At 07.00 a.m. the Albatros arrives on time. The MS Albatros is part of the German company ‘Phoenix Reisen’ and measures 178 meter in length and 25 meters in width. Due to a very busy schedule of the MS Albatros, the ship can only stay in port for six hours. Doing so in IJmuiden grants the 792 passengers enough time to visit the greater Amsterdam area. “Look over there”, says Maes, pointing towards a third cruise vessel passing towards the IJmuiden locks. “That’s the AIDA Sol heading towards Amsterdam. Next Sunday April 8th she will also come to IJmuiden”. “The arrival of the MSC Magnifica and Albatros mark the start of this years’ cruise season, which will run until December”. “While Albatros will depart this afternoon, MSC Magnifica will stay overnight and depart at 07:00 for Hamburg”. “It’s always sad to see them leave at the end of their stay, especially this truly magnificent sea castle. However, we are looking forward to welcome MSC Magnifica back again next year on May 12th.”

The Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden welcomes the brand new Seabourn Ovation!
Saturday 9th June 2018 – Early morning 04.00 and the quayside of the Felison Cruise Terminal is buzzing with activities. Employees of terminal owner KVSA, ship agent VCK, handling agent SMS Shore operations as well as the local boatmen of CVV and the harbourmaster are preparing to welcome MS Seabourn Ovation, one of the world’s most beautiful and luxurious cruise ships. Out at sea the pilot boards the vessel at 05:00. Soon afterwards, the brand new ship, which is only in operation for 35 days, glides graciously into the harbour basin. Seabourn Ovation visits the port of IJmuiden for a so-called turnaround visit. This means that most of the incoming passengers will disembark in this Port. However, new eager cruise enthusiasts are already waiting to replace them. They will embark on a two-week itinerary, sailing throughout the Baltic Sea. Immediately after mooring, the luggage-transfer to the terminal begins. At the gangway, busses are standing by to transfer the disembarking passengers. Under the watchful eye of the provision-master, stevedores begin loading provisions onto the ship. Ten trucks of produce await discharging. Their cargo will ensure all passengers will want for nothing over the next few weeks. Later in the morning, Captain Stig Betten officially welcomes the representatives of the local community, including Mayor Frank Dales. After the symbolic transfer of the plaque and the keys of the city, the captain invites his guests for a tour around the ship. “We are extremely happy and honoured to receive Seabourn Ovation at our terminal”, says Ron Maes, general manager of the Felison Cruise Terminal. Today is a very special occasion; it’s the first time ever that a Seabourn vessel visits IJmuiden”. Seabourn Ovation was officially delivered to her owner on April 27, 2018 and measures 211 meters in length. After setting sail from Genoa, she was christened on May 11 in the port of Valetta, Malta by British singer and actress Elaine Paige. The lyricist Tim Rice wrote a song specifically for the occasion. The ship will spend her inaugural season in Europe. The ship is the fifth to be delivered to her owners in the last decade. It has 300 suites, each with a balcony. Over 1,600 works of art, by 120 artists are displayed aboard the ship.

IJmuiden welcomes Costa Magica.
An unexpected call of Costa Crociere’s Costa Magica in IJmuiden on August 3rd. Expecting bad weather Costa Magica’s captain preferred to divert from Amsterdam’s Passenger Terminal to IJmuiden’s Felison Cruise Terminal, thus avoiding a passage through the IJmuiden locks. Both terminals joined forces and together with excellent support of the involved service companies like DMC Kuoni, Stevedores VCK and Ship Agents DS Shipping, accommodated a smooth turn around for the ship’s 3000 passengers. Felison Cruise Terminal’s General Manager Ron Maes commented: “last minute calls like the visit of the Costa Magica are, by their nature, planned with short notice, requiring good coordination and communication between all involved. In itself the facilitation of a turnaround call is already a labour intensive operation. Next to the passengers and their baggage, the ship requires other services like waste disposal and the replenishment of bunkers and stores. Changing the berth at the last minute can have an huge impact on the operational efficiency and can be extremely time consuming. So I am proud to say that our excellent cooperation made it possible to turnaround Costa Magica without any delays. It is surely a superb example of the high service standard that is offered by the entire Greater Amsterdam Cruise Community, which makes us such an attractive partner to the cruise lines”.
