Porto Cruise Terminal sets new cruise records in 2024

Cruise activity at the Porto Cruise Terminal (Port of Leixões) continues its remarkable growth of recent years, reaching new historical highs in 2024. Last year, the port welcomed 152 cruise ship calls, 15 of which were new to the port, 1 new cruise company and 6 turnaround operations, bringing 196,000 visitors to Porto & Northern Portugal.

These numbers consolidate 2024 as the best year ever for cruise activity at the Porto Cruise Terminal. Compared to the previous year, there was a 32% increase in the number of passengers and a 31% increase in the number of cruise calls.

The United Kingdom remained the largest source market for passengers with 34%, followed by the United States of America (24%) and Germany (23%). The average size of ships calling at Leixões also increased significantly, reaching a record value of 8.9 million GT, which represents a growth of 28% compared to 2023.

The seasonality of cruise activity on the Atlantic Coast continues to be a challenge. However, cruise activity at the port was constant from April to November, with the exception of June. September was the busiest month, with 30,409 passengers, while May had the highest number of calls with 28 cruises.

This growth is due to the joint work of the different players in the cruise industry, including the port operations and Porto Cruise Terminal teams, local authorities and economic agents. The continuous promotion of the activity with the main cruise companies has strengthened the position of the Port of Leixões and Porto Cruise Terminal as a key destination on the Atlantic Coast.

João Pedro Neves, President of Leixões Port Authority stated that “these numbers reflect the growing demand for Porto & North of Portugal by an increasing number of cruise passengers and major cruise lines worldwide, who continue to choose Leixões for their itineraries”. João Pedro Neves also highlights that “the Region is one of the most sought-after destinations in Europe, as also proven by the record numbers registered on the Douro Waterway, which grew 11% in the number of passengers compared to 2023.”

COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
APDL (Leixões Port Authority) is committed to continuing the investment that has been made in last years in port infrastructure, namely with the implementation of Onshore Power Supply (OPS) by 2030, allowing cruise ships to turn off auxiliary engines while docked, significantly reducing carbon emissions and promoting a greener and more sustainable port.

As part of the Roadmap for Energy Transition Towards Carbon Neutrality in the Port of Leixões, since the beginning of 2024, passengers and crew transportation within the Port of Leixões has been carried out using a 100% Electric Bus (Eco Bus) and towing operations for cruises are carried out by new generation tugboats, which are safer and less polluting.

PORTO CRUISE TERMINAL ACHIEVES RECORD-BREAKING YEAR EXCEEDING THE 200,000 PASSENGER MILESTONE FOR THE FIRST TIME

The Porto Cruise Terminal (Port of Leixões) has reached a new milestone in its cruise activity by the end of October 2025: 216,644 passengers, an increase of nearly 30% compared to the same period in 2024 and its best-ever record. For the first time, the Porto Cruise Terminal surpassed the 200,000 annual passenger mark, seven years after reaching the 100,000 mark in 2018. By the end of November, cruise passenger numbers raised to 223,603, which means an increase of 18% compared to the same period of the last year. Porto Cruise Terminal recorded 145 cruise calls by November, matching the previous year’s figure and welcoming 13 maiden visits. In the same period, there were 12 turnaround operations, 5 of which involved around 5,000 passengers each. Turnaround passenger numbers soared to nearly 24,000 from just 2,121 the previous year. The size of the ships calling at the Port of Leixões also increased: the total Gross Tonnage (GT) reached 9.4 million, 9% more compared to 2024. British passengers were once again the most representative, closely followed by Germans and those from the United States. End year numbers point to 148 cruise ship calls and a new annual record of around 225,000 passengers. These numbers confirm the growing attractiveness of Porto and North of Portugal Region in the cruise sector and reinforce the confidence of the main international cruise lines in the Port of Leixões and in Porto Cruise Terminal.

RECORD-BREAKING SEASON FOR CRUISE PASSENGERS IN PORTO CRUISE TERMINAL

In the first half of 2025, the Porto Cruise Terminal (Port of Leixões) welcomed 76 cruise ship calls and 101,079 passengers, a 9% increase in the number of calls and a 38% increase in the number of passengers compared to the same period of 2024. If the forecasts hold, Porto Cruise Terminal could once again reach record numbers by the end of the year as 160 cruise ship calls are already planned to visit the port and cruise passengers’ numbers are expected to rise above 220.000. Most of passengers came from Germany (31%), followed by the UK (29%) and the USA (20%). The months of April, May, and June clearly contributed the most to this growth, with each registering a passenger count of around 30,000. April was the busiest month in terms of passenger numbers (30,266) and May was the month with the most cruise calls (25). During the first six months of the year, Porto Cruise Terminal was especially pleased to welcome 9 inaugural calls, which brings the opportunity to create new long-term partnerships. It was also the “Home Port” for 7 turnaround calls with emphasis on the first 2 operations of 5 planned for this year for Tui’s Mein Schiff 4 and which were completed in July, involving a total of almost 25,000 passengers. These results clearly demonstrate the growing attractiveness of the Porto Cruise Terminal and the Porto & North of Portugal Region among the main Cruise Lines that increasingly choose Leixões for their Atlantic Coast itineraries, especially itineraries starting and ending in the Port of Leixões, further enhancing the Porto & North of Portugal Destination.

PORTO CRUISE TERMINAL CELEBRATED SUCCESSFUL TURNAROUND OPERATIONS FOR TUI’S MEIN SCHIFF 4

The Porto Cruise Terminal (Port of Leixões) has reaffirmed its position as a leading cruise tourism hub and a major economic driver for Porto & North of Portugal Region after successfully handling five consecutive turnaround operations for the TUI Cruises’ Mein Schiff 4, between June 19 and July 17. It was a challenge and a significant logistical effort as it was the largest turnaround operations ever took place at the Port of Leixões, accomplished with high efficiency and competence by all teams involved. A total of 23,351 passengers, along with approximately 4,500 crew members passed by Porto Cruise Terminal during these five turnaround calls: 10,327 embarkations, 10,185 disembarkations and 2,839 transit passengers, almost all of German nationality, which is one of the most important source markets at the port. The 2015-built TUI Mein Schiff 4 cruise ship is owned by TUI Cruises and built by Meyer Turku Shipyard (Finland) targeting predominantly the German-speaking market with a premium travel vacation product. She is 293 meters long, 35 meters wide and has a gross tonnage of 99,500. It can accommodate around 2,700 passengers and 1,000 crew members. Over these five weeks having Porto Cruise Terminal as her “Home Port”, Mein Schiff 4 followed Atlantic Coast itineraries calling Bilbao, Le Verdon-sur-Mer, La Coruña, Vigo, Gibraltar, Tangier, Cádiz and Lisbon. These operations clearly reinforce the position of Porto Cruise Terminal as a leading port for cruise activity and turnaround operations, acting as an important driver and bringing significant economic benefits to Porto & Northern Portugal Region, attracting visitors, generating revenue and reinforcing its reputation as a premium destination. Most of the over 20,000 turnaround passengers for these Mein Schiff 4 calls arrived via weekly charter flights from various German cities, specifically to explore the best of Porto and Northern Portugal, uncover authentic experiences, breath-taking landscapes, cultural heritage and the finest gastronomy and directly contributing to the regional economy. Looking ahead, 2026 is set to bring even more turnaround calls and passengers. The Mein Schiff 6, also operated by TUI Cruises, is scheduled to carry out 11 turnaround operations at Porto Cruise Terminal between July and September, involving close to 50,000 embarking and disembarking passengers.
