Seydisfjordur is expecting 114 calls this year, compared to 74 in 2022. Of these 21 were first time calls from ships such as Viking Saturn, Seabourn Ovation, AIDAsol, Jewel of the Seas, Celebrity Silhouette and Sylvia Earle.

This is the highest number of calls the Icelandic port has had to date, says Adalheidur Borgporsdottir, marketing director Ports of Mulathing, who attributes a part of the increase to the situation in Europe generally and also to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In 2020, a new municipality was formed, Mulathing, which encompasses 5,000 people and the small port towns of Seydisfjordur, Djupivogur and Borgarfjordur.

Two weeks ago a website was launched - www.portsofmulathing.is - to showcase to the cruise industry what the region has to offer in terms of facilities and tourism.

There are two main berths in Seydisfjordur: Strandarbakki pier which has a length of 170m and a depth of 10m; and Bjolfsbakki pier 150m/7m respectively.

This summer a smaller pier, Angro, will be ready where ships of up to 120m will be able come alongside (150m long and 7m depth).

The port is also planning to enlarge the main berth from 170m to 380m within the next five years.

For ships on anchorage there is a tender pier close to the two berths above.

This summer international flights to Frankfurt are being established at the Egilsstadir airport just 20 minutes’ drive from Seydisfjordur.
