The port and city of Turku have begun a big multimillion project - co-funded by CEF - that includes renewal of the infrastructure, quays and car fields as well as digitalisation at the port.
An architectural competition is being held that is also receiving international attention. At the beginning of May, a winner will be announced who will be the designer of the port’s new passenger terminal, which is scheduled to be launched in February 2026, explains Annika Schulman, assistant executive Port of Turku.
In terms of the coming season and call numbers, she says: “We have been strongly effected by the situation in St Petersburg and we are looking at a record summer at the moment regarding cruise calls in Turku.” Presently there are more than 20 calls confirmed with the possibility that the number will continue to rise. Since some of the itinerary changes may not yet have been disseminated to the passengers, further details are not present at this time.
The season begins on May 3 and continues through to late September. However Schulman says the surrounding nature in winter time could be appealing to extend the season to all year round, particularly as the port is open year round.
“Since we have our regular liner ships calling twice a day all year, the port is active and ready for cruise calls any time a year, also with short notice.”For example, Viking Lines’ ferry, Viking Glory, began home-porting Turku year-round following her delivery from China in early April.
