UK port operator Solent Stevedores has been awarded the Best Environmental Initiative for its industry leading environmental improvements at its cruise facilities in the Port of Southampton.

In partnership with ABP and as part of a port-wide air quality strategy, the cruise stevedores implemented a number of initiatives to contribute towards and improve the short-term and long-term air quality in the port. These include a £1 million (€1.2 million) investment in a new fleet of 35 electric emission-free counterbalance trucks for use across the port’s five cruise terminals.

Solent Stevedores enhanced staff engagement to embed environmental values and introduced a cycle to work scheme. In addition to these initiatives having a proven positive impact on the environment they also implemented a number of upgraded safety measures.

Tom Dynes, operations director Solent Stevedores, commented: “We are incredibly proud to receive this award in recognition of our forward-thinking environmental initiatives. It is important for us to be a key player in the wider cruise industry movement to become more sustainable. We know that positive progress with air quality is also an important part of the future of the city of Southampton and we’re dedicated to being part of this.”

In Southampton, the family-run company provides a wide range of port services to cruise operators including all Carnival group companies, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Saga and MSC Cruises. About 450 calls are handled annually. Employees, exceptional customer service and environmental initiatives are at the heart of its operations.
