Although Denmark has reopened for cruiseships, the need for 100% of passengers on board to be vaccinated means that many of the companies that had booked calls can no longer visit.
Henrik Ahlqvist, sales director Copenhagen Malmo Port, told Cruise Europe: “Obviously, it should sound like good news that passengers are finally allowed to go ashore, but the vaccination protocol means that almost no cruiselines can visit Copenhagen this summer. In that sense, the reopening does not have a very positive impact on the cruise industry in Denmark, unfortunately.”
In Copenhagen, for example, there were 103 calls booked at the beginning of June. Of these only 22 small ship calls from companies such as Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Noble-Caledonia and Nicko Cruises, are now going ahead.
Ahlqvist explained that TUI Cruises, MSC Cruises and AIDA Cruises, which had the majority of calls booked, are unable to ensure that all passengers are vaccinated and therefore cannot now call.
Prior to the pandemic, there were 350 calls and almost one million passengers booked to visit the Danish capital.
