Hamburg establishes a YouTube channel to keep the community informed during difficult times

Since November 1 Germany has been back in lockdown which means that technical calls and layup are still permitted but cruises have been temporarily suspended.

During the past few weeks, Cruise Gate Hamburg, together with local stakeholders such as Hamburg Tourism Association, has focused on the opening of a new You Tube Channel called ‘Hamburg Cruise News’: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnt4YkCd3GTcPsy91wB4WdQ.
Simone Maraschi, managing director CGH, says: “The purpose of this channel, especially in the current situation, is to re-establish confidence and trust in the cruise industry and keep the community informed about our activities.

“In the future we will also present videos concerning the environment, sustainability and impact of cruise tourism. These are all topics which have caused controversial discussion in the past. We feel it is our duty as a port within a city community to engage in open discussion and present clear facts and information to the community.”

Prior to the November lockdown the Port of Hamburg had been one of the few in the world to remain open during the pandemic. Eleven cruiseships found a temporary home in the German city. While some crew returned home, those remaining on board were taken care of by the city which organised sightseeing tours and Corona-Port-Concerts. In addition Cruise Center Steinwerder was set up for drive-in cinemas and concerts for the locals, instead of cruises.

Sustainability remained centre stage. For 30 days Europa 2 was supplied with shore power at the terminal in Altona and successfully certified. In addition Hamburg has fought to have excess food from cruiseships donated to a good cause instead of going to waste. In September TUI Cruises became the first cruise line to donate with more to follow.

In June the new terminal Baakenhoft went into operation for the first time, now serving as a port of call at HafenCity.

This year, despite the pandemic, Hamburg has hosted 83 calls from AIDA Cruises, TUI Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Hurtigruten.
