AIDAsol plugs in to Hamburg Altona’s onshore power supply

In 2019 AIDAsol used the onshore power supply at the Hamburg Altona cruise terminal 13 times and drew 566 MWh of electricity (all at 60 Hz and 11 kVA).

Supplying the ships with shorepower has had no effect on the local grid. Due to industrial use the Hamburg power grid is designed for 110 kV power and consumption in the terawatt hour range, whereas the power and consumption of the cruiseships are very small.

The facility has been built to adjust the frequency of the local distribution grid to any ship’s electrical system. This is necessary because on land in Europe there are 50Hz and on the cruise ships 60 Hz.

In the USA however there is no need to adjust/convert since the frequency is the same on land as it is on the ship.
