As the cruise season closed in Flam, figures were released showing that 257,988 passengers visited on 153 calls, 7,027 more than in 2017.

Jon Olav Stedje, manager port operations Port of Flam, commented on the record-breaking season: “The main reason for this is the extension of the season. It has been cruiseships in Flam in eight of 12 months. It has been a goal for us to extend the season and develop more into a whole-year destination. Flam and the region has something to offer through all year and Flam is open 365. Therefore we are pleased to see that we are moving in the right direction.”

June, July and August are the busiest months with the possibility of growth limited due to “wanting to secure the quality of what the destination can deliver”.

In terms of nationality split, UK visitors make up the majority at 90,392, followed by Germany at 38,136, Spain 29,739, USA 21,408 and Italy 17,184.

Next year, numbers are up again: 166 calls and about 265,000 passengers. New excursions include the longest zipline in Scandinavia, the Viking Village in Gudvangen which is getting bigger and a new gondola in Voss. The small town is also developing with new cafes, a bakery, more shopping opportunities and upgraded recreational areas being ready for the upcoming season.
