Loen will be the home of one of the world’s steepest cable car rides. Some believe it may be the number one tourist attraction in Fjord Norway in the coming years. And it’s located only 6 km from the Port of Olden – Nordfjord.
Loen Skylift is located in the innermost part of the Nordfjord. From May 20, 2017 you will be able to travel from the fjord in Loen to the peak of Mount Hoven in just five minutes, an ascent of 1,001 metres.
Their goal is to transport at least 40,000 passengers up and down in 2017.
The local newspaper Sunnmørsposten recently paid a visit to the construction site and they were assured that everything is going according to the plan. The pricetag on this project is NOK 267,5 million.
“It is definitely a unique construction and a special construction site. We’re reaching new landmarks daily,” says Åsgeir Tomasgaard to the paper. Tomasgaard works for the developer HS Bygg. The main owners are Hotel Alexandra, Garaventa AG, Nordfjord kjøtt and Stryn Municipaliy. In addition many local companies are shareholders.
The new attraction is located near Olden and Geiranger, easily accessible for cruise passengers.
When you reach the peak of Mount Hoven you can go for a walk in the mountains and have dinner from the menu of the mountain’s new restaurant, while enjoying the view to Lake Lovatnet, the Jostedal glacier and the Nordfjord.
At the Hoven peak there are a wide variety of activities during summer and winter. There is 70 kilometers of easily accessible hiking trails, and during winter there are possibilities for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ski touring.
You can also find a popular Via Ferrata at Loen. You can cross the Gjølmunnebrua bridge, Europe’s longest Via Ferrata bridge. The bridge is located at 750 meters above sea level, is 120 meters long and has 160 meters to the bottom of the canyon.
Kristian Jørgensen is the managing director at Fjord Norway and he believes this is a promising project. - With fjords in every direction, spectacular mountains and the Jostedal glacier in the background, you have a stunning view. Loen Skylift is without a doubt one of the most promising tourism projects in the Northern countries. We cannot wait for the opening in 2017.
