CRUISE SEASON 2013 "BEST EVER" - BERGEN - NORWAY'S LEADING CRUISEPORT WITH 338 CRUISE CALLS
The season started on 25 February with MV Boudicca.
As of today, 321 cruise ships called at Bergen and close to 447,000 (446,406) cruise passengers visited Bergen, walked around in our beautiful city, in narrow streets, visited our attractions and shopped. This is an increase of 21.9% in cruise ship calls, and about. 27.5% in the number of passengers. The visit of the MV Amadea on the 12th of December will bring approx.600 German passengers to Bergen.Number of calls could have been better, but because of the pilot boat strike in June, we lost five calls.
In 2003 we passed 200 cruise shipsIn 2006 we passed the 200,000 passengersIn 2011 we passed the 300,000 passengersIn 2012, we passed 300 calls with a passenger capacity of approx. 447,000.The cruise season has been "stretched", starting in February and ending in December. The trend shows that Bergen in 2014 also gets calls in November. We are actively working for Bergen to be a year-round cruise port. Furthermore, we envisage that Bergen can be turn-around port for ships and passengers, or maybe a home port for cruise ships. The terminal at Skolten will be available to cruise ships when Fjord Line, with their two new ferries, are going to move to theJekteviken area. We then have the opportunity to take passengers through the terminal for check-in, passport-control and customs checks.
Port of Bergen had 13 first call arrivals/maiden voyages this year. These we make a little extra fuss of, by the arranging the Fire Brigade Corps Band playing at departure, a popular measure that is much appreciated by both passengers and the crew.
The cruise season 2013 has now been reviewed 329 calls, with estimated passenger numbers at ca. 475,000. Further 130 calls booked for 2014 and 54 for 2015. We note that cruise companies reports earlier than before, in order to secure a berth.
Port of Bergen Port Authority / Cruise Destination Bergen works actively with decision makers in the cruise companies for the cruise ship to visit Bergen. We want longer seasons, and that the vessels are distributed smoothly in relation to the berth capacity we have in Bergen.
Bergen was in 2011 ranked as number 5 of "Top Ports" in Northern Europe, than we had 264 calls and 350,248 passengers.
