Virtuosa performance sets cruise record at Lerwick
A highlight of Shetland port’s busiest season yet. The largest cruise ship yet to visit Lerwick Harbour entered the Shetland port today (Monday 20 May) on a maiden visit, breaking a near six-year record. At 181,541 gross tonnes, the Maltese-flag MSC Virtuosa is 332 metres long, with 18 decks and accommodation for up to 6,334 passengers and 1,704 crew. She was built in France in 2020 at a cost of 800 million Euros. There are 60 nationalities on board on a 7-day Norwegian Fjords voyage. The vessel is anchored in the deep-water harbour, with passengers transferring by tender to-and-from Victoria Pier in the town centre. Virtuosa arrived from Southampton before heading for Nordfjordeid. in Western Norway. Guests have been treated to a warm Viking welcome ashore from members of the Lerwick Jarl Squad. Melanie Henderson, Lerwick Port Authority Cruise & Marketing Manager, said: “The majority of cruise ships visiting Lerwick are small- to medium-sized vessels. Virtuosa’s maiden call is another example of Shetland’s popularity as a tourist destination, and the port’s capacity to welcome the larger vessels is also operating. The largest previous cruise vessel to call at Lerwick was Virtuosa's sister ship, MSC Meraviglia (171,598 gross tonnes) in July 2018. Virtuosa’s visit is a highlight of a year also expected to set records for tonnage and number of vessels and passengers, The cruise ship Hebridean Sky is also in port today, berthed at Victoria Pier East.

Port of Lisbon Welcomes the Inaugural Voyage of Cunard Line's Largest Luxury Ship
The Port of Lisbon welcomed the new cruise ship Queen Anne, currently on its inaugural voyage. The Portuguese capital was the third city on the itinerary, following Southampton and La Coruña. To mark the choice of Lisbon for the inaugural voyage of the Queen Anne, the Port of Lisbon presented Captain Inger Thorhauge, the first woman to command a Cunard Line ship, with the customary commemorative plaque for the occasion. Carlos Correia, President of the Port of Lisbon Administration, considers it "an honor and a great prestige that the Port of Lisbon has been chosen once again as one of the destinations for the inaugural voyages of Cunard Line ships. Cunard Line ships have already attracted many onlookers to the banks of the Tagus River, both for their first calls and for their international events, such as on May 6, 2014, when the Port of Lisbon welcomed for the first time simultaneously the '3 Queens' of this operator – Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2, and Queen Victoria. It was only the fourth time in history that the three 'Queen' ships have come together, with the Port of Lisbon being the third location for this event, alongside Southampton and New York. Therefore, we are very enthusiastic about the visit of the Queen Anne." The new Queen Anne is the first ship to enter service for Cunard Line in over 10 years and is the company's second-largest vessel. It has a crew capacity of 1,225, can accommodate 2,996 passengers in double occupancy and 3,353 in maximum occupancy within its 1,397 cabins distributed across 8 of the ship's 13 decks. The ship measures 323 meters in length and has a gross tonnage of 113,000. The Queen Anne focuses on reducing its carbon footprint through various innovative methods that include alternative fuels and cutting-edge technology, closed-loop circular economies, and the reduction and elimination of non-essential single-use plastics.

Foyle Port to Welcome Six Inaugural Calls in 2024
The Port in Derry-Londonderry, which is celebrating its 170th anniversary this year, is expected to host nine different cruise lines and six inaugural calls between May and September. 2023 was a record-breaking year for the Port as they welcomed over 16,000 passengers and crew, including the arrival of the biggest ship to ever anchor in the Foyle, Norwegian Star. Her sister ship, Norwegian Dawn is expected in August of this year. At least six ships will make a welcome return to the destination including Hebridean Princess, which is scheduled to make two overnight visits in the city centre berth at Fort George. 50% of the calls this year will be inaugural visits showing growth in demand for the destination. This includes a first time visit from Villa Vie Residences, a brand-new startup offering a three-and-a-half year residential world cruise. Foyle Port’s Harbour Master and Operations Director, Bill McCann said, “We are very much looking forward to welcoming back all our returning cruise lines and eagerly await those who are visiting for the first time. The port has worked hard in recent years to promote the destination on a global scale with an aim of building cruise tourism to the region.” Visit Derry’s Chief Executive, Odhran Dunne said, “Visit Derry are delighted that Lough Foyle will welcome cruise passengers from around the globe again this year to experience some of the fantastic range of tourism attractions and experiences on offer across the North West region. Whilst the cruise visitors will have a unique opportunity to enjoy some of the stunning scenery along the Causeway Coastal Route and Wild Atlantic Way, we are delighted that many will also enjoy the unique heritage and culture of the Walled City during their visit.” He added, “Visit Derry looks forward to working in partnership with Foyle Port to provide a warm welcome and visitor information shoreside to all the cruise passengers and crew arriving this season.” These sentiments were echoed by Louise Denvir, Cruise Marketing Executive, Foyle Port who said, “The North West has the most incredible range of tourism products on offer in an area of outstanding natural beauty which, we believe, makes it the most attractive cruise destination on the island of Ireland. Donegal was named one of the best regions in the world to visit in 2024 by Lonely Planet due to the scenic landscape, rich history, commitment to sustainable tourism practices and the warm, friendly people. The historic, vibrant city of Derry-Londonderry, home to the ‘Derry Girls’, award-winning museums and some of the greatest outdoor festivals in the world is right on our doorstep making for an incredibly compelling destination for international cruise visitors.” The first cruise ship, Seabourn Ovation, will anchor in Greencastle on 14th May. New bollards, better mooring options
The ongoing project at our port to enhance the cruise berth includes several key improvements aimed at ensuring safe mooring and operational efficiency for cruise ships throughout the year. Here’s a breakdown of the project: 1. Installation of Three New Bollards: - Three new bollards are being installed as part of the enhancement project. - Each bollard is designed to handle up to 250 tons of mooring force. - Two of these bollards will be located on the east side of the berth. - The third bollard will be positioned on the west side of the berth. 2. Strategic Placement for Optimal Mooring: - Placing two bollards on the east side and one on the west side ensures optimal distribution of mooring forces. - This strategic placement enhances the stability and safety of the vessels during mooring operations. 3. Benefits for Cruise Ships: - The enhanced mooring capabilities allow cruise ships to safely dock year-round. - Cruise ships will be able to stay securely moored alongside the berth while remaining connected to shore power. The project demonstrates a commitment to upgrading port facilities to meet the growing demands of the cruise industry. These upgrades aim to provide a safe and efficient docking experience for all vessels visiting the port.

Cruise season kicks off this year with a musical liner
The first cruise ship of the year has already come to Klaipėda Port. Its theme is music. This is also the first visit to the Lithuanian seaside for the liner “Le Bellot”. A total of 10 such cruise ships are expected this year. Between the end of April and October, 53 cruise liners are expected to visit Klaipėda Port and the city. “Every spring, the cruise ships that appear in Klaipėda Port announce the coming summer, when the city will once again be filled with tourists, music and people bustling in the streets. The first swallow of this year is exceptional, as it brings not only people but also music to the city, and after all, everything is always more positive with music. We hope that this year’s season will be more successful for the Klaipėda Port, both in terms of the number of cruise ships and the number of tourists arriving by cruise ships, than last year. We are expecting about 30% more ships and an equally increased number of tourists”, says Algis Latakas, Director General of Klaipėda State Seaport Authority. In collaboration with “Radio clasique” and “Alain Duault”, one of France’s finest contemporary poets and author of many books on music, cruise ship owner “Ponant” has combined a cruise to historic cities on the Baltic Sea with a special musical project. The cruise ship “Le Bellot” started its journey on 20 April in Copenhagen. After visiting the ports of Karlskrona and Gdansk, the cruise ship arrived in Klaipėda. A total of 140 tourists were invited to visit the Old Town, Palanga and Neringa, where the guests have the opportunity not only to see, but also to taste or make something. Sensory tourism and unique experiences are a recent trend in tourism. Built in 2020, the ship flies the flag of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna and is 131 metres long. However, less than half of the ships of this size are expected to be in the port of Klaipėda this year. It is estimated that around 60 percent of them will be large cruise liners, exceeding 200 meters in length. The percentage of large ships coming to the Port of Klaipėda reflects both the principles of shipping in general and the development of cruise shipping. In order to keep pace with market changes and to be able to accommodate all cruise ships, Klaipėda Port needs to be developed and expanded accordingly. Last year, the existing cruise ship terminal in Klaipėda Port already welcomed the cruise season in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Waste water from cruise ships is discharged into the sewage network after berth reconstruction and landscaping works. The construction of a new cruise ship terminal next to the Winter Port is expected to start this year. In a few years’ time, two new modern berths for cruise ships are expected to be built in Klaipėda Port. The cruise ship season in Klaipėda is expected to end on 1 October this year. 63 cruise ships have already expressed their wish to visit Klaipėda next year and bring tourists here.

CRUISE SHIP IS BIGGEST EVER FOR SCRABSTER PORT

The 2024 Scrabster Harbour cruise season started with a record this week when the largest vessel to ever berth at the port arrived. The AIDAsol, operated by AIDA cruises, arrived at 6.30 am last Tuesday. The Sphinx class vessel measured 253 metres in length and 71,304 tonnes.

On a 11-night voyage of Scotland and Norway 2,071 passengers and 624 crew were aboard. The German passengers enjoyed sixteen organised excursions to various attractions and locations around Caithness. In addition, Scrabster Harbour Trust provided free shuttle buses to take the visitors and crew into Thurso town. The guests were welcomed at the quayside and in town by an enthusiastic volunteer “Meet & Greet” team armed with information on the local attractions, facilities and shops. Prior to departure, the passengers were entertained quayside by the Caithness Junior Pipe band and local highland dancers.

AISAsol has a further two Scrabster calls scheduled for the 2024 cruise season.

Sandy Mackie, Trust Manager said “The berthing of the AIDAsol is further demonstration of the harbour’s capacity to accommodate larger ships. We look forward to the remainder of the cruise season. Although our cruise vessel numbers are modest in comparison to some other ports, I am encouraged that we have a number of maiden calls, and the Trust will continue to work hard to increase future bookings. The Trust appreciates the community cooperation and effort to ensure the cruise visitors have an enjoyable experience”.

Le Havre’s large-scale development project is due to be delivered in 2026
In 2022 a joint venture between Haropa Port and the conurbation of Le Havre Seine Metropole a new company has been established - GIP Le Havre Croisieres - to manage the cruise terminals and also the building of new facilities at the Port of Le Havre. Steven Protois, general manager, and Valerie Conan, cruise director, were at Seatrade Global in Miami to showcase the Pointe de Floride development project. The project includes three state-of-the-art terminals and onshore power supply (OPS) on three cruise-dedicated berths. Demolition of the old hangars has already begun with the terminals being phased in at different times. The new buildings will be energy-positive due to a photovoltaic roof, energy-efficient operations and low-carbon construction processes. Terminals 2 (6,000 passengers) and 3 (1,000 passengers) at Quai Pierre Callet (530m long, 12m depth) and Quai Joannes Couvert (500m long, 12m depth) will be joined and refurbished and ready for operation in September 2025. Terminal 1 (3,500 passengers) at Quai Roger Meunier (470m long, 9m depth) will be delivered in January 2026. During in season and one out of season. Pier availability is already guaranteed for confirmed calls. Onshore power will be available on all three quays, providing 10mW at each. The port is deploying the same system as that in Kiel. The source of energy is 60% nuclear, 29% renewable and 6% gas. New passenger boarding bridges are equipped with an intermediate podium which will reduce the incline caused by extreme tides in Le Havre. The 9-hectare Pointe de Floride site overlooks the port of Le Havre and the coastline of the Unesco World Heritage city centre. Several landscaped walks and a rooftop terrace on Terminal 1 will enable passengers and residents to enjoy this unique panorama. The total investment is €100 million which will be provided by Haropa and the GIP Le Havre Croisieres with contributions from the conurbation Le Havre Seine Metropole and the Normandy region. Visitor attractions are constantly being upgraded also. For example, Un Ete au Havre transforms the city into an open-air contemporary art exhibition with artists invited to create works of art that are displayed in public spaces during the summer. In addition a new contemporary art gallery is being built and is due to open in late 2025. This year the port is expecting 162 calls, of which 54 are turnarounds (the majority partial). Passengers will number 490,000. With the new development in place, the port will have a capacity of 13,500 passengers a day, including 6,000 turnarounds (or transit) in Terminal 2 and 3,500 in Terminal 1, with projections for 2030 being 600,000 passengers.

GPH signs up Liverpool Cruise Port
Global Ports Holding (GPH) has signed a 50-year agreement with Peel Ports Group and Liverpool City Council (LCC) to operate the Liverpool Cruise Port.   Angie Redhead, head of cruise/city halls/events LCC, said at Seatrade Global in Miami last week: “This is a really, really big day. The return of passenger shipping to Liverpool has been a huge source of civic pride since the day we opened our new cruise berth back in 2007. I am so proud of the city. But our work is done. The second chapter of our maritime history now begins and thanks to GPH there will be two berths, which will just be completely transformative for Liverpool.”   Indeed, the plan is to invest up to £25 million (€29 million) into infrastructure, which will include a floating dock that will allow for the simultaneous berthing of two 300m ships and over 7,000 passengers a day.    A new terminal will be built with waterfront retail and hospitality outlets expanded both for passengers, land-based tourists and residents.   Mehmet Kutman, chairman and ceo GPH, said: "The addition of Liverpool Cruise Port, our first cruise port in the British Isles, to our network marks another important milestone in GPH's ongoing development and growth. “I would like to thank Liverpool City Council and Peel Ports for their support throughout the process. Liverpool boasts a rich maritime heritage, and the GPH team looks forward to working with all stakeholders to further enhance the success of this remarkable destination.”   Last year, the city received 102 calls and 186,000 passengers. With the new infrastructure in place  passenger numbers are anticipated to exceed 300,000.

Tromso, a sustainable destination, prepares for OPS
Tromso, also known as the Arctic capital, may be keen to increase its number of turnaround calls (28 this year compared to 18 last out of a total of 200), but not at the expense of overcrowding the city.    There are two cruise port areas in Tromso: city centre and Breivika. To ensure optimum capacity in the city, the port has made the decision to only have one big ship a day in the city (Quay 8) and one at Breivika (Quay 20-24). In general, cruiseships spend long hours in port, (in 2023 the total average was 13.3 hours) giving passengers plenty of time to see all the attractions.    Lone Helle, director of tourism Visit Tromsø-Region, says: “For the sustainability focus, this is good. Cruiselines have to book in advance.”   The fact that there has been an increase in direct flights to places such as Germany and UK has helped. The sheltered harbour allows for year-round calls without fear of cancellation. “Tromso is a year-round destination. It offers the best of two worlds: a vibrant city life and the raw Arctic wilderness. “We are blessed with the midnight sun during summertime, and the Northern Lights during autumn and winter. There are numerous pre- and post-cruise opportunities available, both in the city and in the Tromso region,” Helle adds.  Onshore power is being tested at the city quay in the autumn, with it being due to be fully operational early next year, according to Harriet Willassen, marketing and communication manager Port of Tromso.    In Breivika an onshore power supply (OPS) connection is planned for 2027 and, further out, the possibility of building a terminal is being considered.    Meanwhile, a new restaurant and viewpoint are being built at the top of the cable car, Fjellheisen. It will open in October 2025. The first spa hotel, Enter St Elisabeth, is due to open during spring 2024, and Polaria (Arctic experience and aquarium centre) is being expanded. In addition, the old shipyard and surrounds are being developed. Tromso is a part of the Norwegian national labelling scheme, Sustainable Destination.

Caen-Ouistreham gears up for the 80th D-Day anniversary
Three calls will be welcomed to Caen-Ouistreham for the 80th D-Day anniversary in the first week of June: one from Sea Cloud (Sea Cloud Spirit charter by Kalos Golf) and two from Ponant’s Le Dumont-d’Urville. When it comes to historical events, the city will be celebrating its millennium next year and, as a result, there are many redevelopment projects taking place, including some connected to cruise. For example, the port and the city is renovating the main city centre cruise quay. Morgan Pravos, cruise manager Caen-Ouistreham Normandy Cruise (CONC), says: “We have chosen to have one call a day on this cruise quay so we want to the have best quality and personalised service for the guests and the cruiselines. We don’t want quantity, but quality.” As part of that quality, CONC provides free shuttle buses to the city, bags for the passengers, a welcome concert on the pier and more. It has also been offering new shore excursion ideas to the tour operators, such as private cooking classes in a chateau and - for the D-Day anniversary visitors - a personalised, small group visit to the Caen Memorial museum hosted by a curator. In terms of infrastructure the Colombelles Bridge is being replaced, which will increase the navigable width of the channel to 40m (37m with dolphins). Due to open in summer 2026, there will be no air draught restrictions as the bridge has the facility to open. In addition studies are taking place for the provision of onshore power (OPS) at the main city centre cruise quay. Most of the investment will come from the port but the hope is to find finance from regional, national and European partners. Pravos comments: “The maximum number of calls we will accept is about 20 so OPS is a big investment for us.” The port is expecting eight calls this year, including one each from Ocean Albatros and Star Pride, which will both be making their first visit.

Trondheim receives funds for OPS
Trondheim Port Authority (TPA) has been allocated Nkr 20 million (€1.7 million) by the government to establish shore power for cruiseships at the main cruise quay. The facility is to supply 50Hz and 60Hz, 6.6kV & 11kV and up to 12 mW with IEC/IEEE 80005-1 plugs. The total cost is estimated at NKr87 million, with the Nkr 67 million balance coming from TPA. In order to communicate to the community the economic value of cruise tourism and its geographic spread, a comprehensive analysis is taking place this summer, explains Maria Kuhnl Undheim, marketing manager cruise TPA. In addition the port has arranged to take politicians on board methanol-ready Mein Schiff 7 to further communicate the sustainability of cruise vessels. This is the third year that visits aboard have been organised. In late February/early March 2025, Trondheim will be hosting the FIS Nordic World Ski Championship. Buses in the region will be used for transportation to and from the arena of Granasen, just 10 minutes from the city. There are now direct flights to London to Munich and Amsterdam, making the Norwegian city more easily accessible for fly-cruise. This year, 93 calls are expected to Trondheim, Hitra, Froya and Namsos, all of which are part of the TPA. Up to 198,000 passengers will discover the heart of Norway, Trondelag, now known as Home of Nordic Flavour.

New member: Figueira da Foz
Joining the Cruise Europe family, and a newcomer to the sector, is the Port of Figueira da Foz (PFdF), located between Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, both of which have international airports. The city of about 60,000 inhabitants welcomed passengers on three calls last year - two from Swan Hellenic Cruises’ Diana - and is keen to expand the cruise business.   Cruiseships of 140m length and 5.5m depth (without tide) can presently be accommodated on the west side of the general cargo terminal in the west of the port. This position has an exit/entry gate for passengers and is about 300/400m from the City Hall and downtown, according to Joaquim Sotto Maior, port coordinator PFdF. Public transport, bus and taxis are available near the City Hall and, if organised ahead of time, a free city tour bus can be arranged.   An anchorage outside the port is available two miles from the breakwater. However this can be adjusted closer in liaison with the Maritime Authority, explains Maior. From the port entrance to the two tender piers in the marina is about 0.5nm.   There is no specific equipment for baggage handling but this an arrangement that could be put in place if needed. Tourist information can be provided on the quay and also in the upper part of town, where there are coffee shops and toilets. A gangway can be provided if necessary.   Later this year, works are expected to start for deepening the port entrance, navigation channel and piers. The turning basin will be enlarged, demolishing old breakwaters in the south bank. The quay used for cruiseships will be extended five metres towards the river the pier (alongside the two others) and will have a depth of 9m. Bollards will be added to cater to the larger capacity. “These works are expected to take 18 months and then we will be capable of receiving ships with a maximum draught of 8m and maximum lengths between 140m and 170m,” says Maior.   In addition, the hope is to build a passenger terminal to be operational in 2026, which will house services, such as tourist information, toilets, WiFi, coffee shop, baggage handling, and customs & immigration.   Development of LNG is not scheduled but bunkering by truck could be made possible in the meantime. Low Sulphur Fuel EU rules are already in force. Onshore power supply introduction is not scheduled but it is intended to be operating in the next three or four years, following the works to receive bigger ships, according to Maior.   Shore excursions are mainly going to Coimbra (library) and museums, Conimbriga (Roman archaeological ruins), the Bussaco Forest with a religious and military history, the wine region of Bairrada, the salt pans and the ancient seaside resort of Figueira da Foz itself. There are other possibilities such as Fatima’s Sanctuary. These excursions are mainly tailored by tour operators such as TUI/Intercruises.

Gdansk maps out its future plans
The Port of Gdansk Authority, together with tour operator Baltic Gateway Group, were on hand at Seatrade Cruise Global to showcase what the city and region has to offer both operationally and touristically. In addition, a long-term plan to invest in a fourth generation passenger terminal was presented. This will be equipped with the facilities and conveniences necessary to handle cruiseships and ferries and their passengers.
Ships up to 370m in length and a draught of up to 10m will be able to come alongside. Passenger handling capacity will be 800,000 a year. A helicopter pad will be located nearby. Located in the central port, the total investment value of which will be €2.5 billion, the terminal is planned within the next 10 to 12 years, according to Michal Stupak, account manager Port Gdansk. Funding is due to come from public private partnership, credits and the Port of Gdansk’s own resources. Shore excursions include the Teutonic Castle of Malbork, which is one of the biggest remaining Gothic fortresses in the world, an open-air museum in Wdzydze founded In 1906, the Sierra golf club and course, the European Solidarity Centre and the new Museum of Amber. For €5, passengers can purchase a Gdansk tourist card with provides free entry to the top tourist attractions, as well discounts of up to 25% on other attractions and services and 20%on local restaurants. In 2022, Gdansk welcomed 79 calls and 29,251 passengers. This year 62 and 25,700 respectively are expected.

Olden and Maloy make a winning and sustainable team
Olden and Maloy may be just two hours apart by road (four hours by sea) but they offer two entirely different experiences for just one port arrival fee. With slow steaming becoming more popular, cruiselines can offer passengers both coastal and fjord shore experiences, with the added benefit of both ports gearing up for onshore power. Maloy only entered the cruise market in 2022 but this year will receive 80,000 passengers while Olden welcomes 340,000 on total calls for the two ports together coming to 150. Next year the numbers are 130,000, 355,000 and180 respectively. Solve Oldeide, assisting harbour master Port of Nordfjord, says Olden’s attempts to limit its call and passenger numbers in order to protect the environment - turning down 30 calls last year - have been frustrated by cruiselines simply booking nearby ports. Hence offering Maloy as an alternative/additional call could be advantageous to the lines. Maloy is already well versed in catering to numbers. Last year the port accommodated two ships - MSC Eurasia and AIDAperla - on one day, July 27. Almost 92% of the passengers are handled through Maloy Adventure, which was set up last year to provide ground handling, but is now expanding into Olden and a new destination south of Bergen in 2024. The ports have each added a 200t bollard at the cost of Nkr 1.5 million (€0.13 million), replacing those of 50t, at the request of Carnival UK (Olden) and MSC Cruises (Maloy). Olden will have onshore power installed in July 2026 (12mW) at a cost of NKr 20 million and Maloy in June 2026 (8mW). In addition Olden is looking into the feasibility of installing an extra pier.

New connections to Klaksvik open it up for more calls
The building of tunnels to connect Klaksvik to its neighbouring islands in the Faroes is expanding its shore excursion offering, for example passengers can be hiking in the mountains within a 10 minute drive. Theresa Kreutzmann, managing director Visit Nordoy, says: “The infrastructure is changing completely because tunnels are opening this year, connecting the islands, so it will be easier to get around. One tunnel is open in the north already and the end of year there will be another. This is connecting the island in a new and modern way.” The 320m quay can accommodate every size of ship in all weathers due to its sheltered location. There are possibilities in the town centre for the smaller and expedition ships to come alongside. Six calls are expected this year and the aim is to rebuild these numbers to nearer the 20 that came in the past. A new tourism strategy has been put in place which includes, for example, home dining and private concerts. In addition a small terminal, containing a tourist information office, will be built alongside the larger quay.

Tallinn joins Miami-Dade on cleanup day
Ryan Jenkins, managing director of Travelife Certified Estonian tour operator Den Eesti, was surprised and delighted when approached by Miami-based Estonian celebrity The Mermaid/Lady Merle Liivand, during Seatrade Cruise Global, and asked to join in the annual Biscayne Bay Cleanup Day.    Colleague Sirle Arro, head of marketing and communications for Port of Tallinn, says: “The event was ideal for Estonians, as the World Cleanup Day movement originated in Estonia and now has spread all over the world, though still coordinated from Tallinn by the global NGO Let's Do It World.”   Carrying on the tradition, Jenkins was more than happy to join Guinness World Record swimmer and ocean acitivist Liivand and the Mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava. He comments: “In a few free hours before heading to the airport, I got to visit a beautiful part of Miami that I had never seen before and make it even more beautiful; meet the mayor of Miami-Dade County and discuss similarities with our own efforts in Tallinn; talk to a local scout troop who was there helping out; and scare a couple of iguanas while pulling trash out of the dunes.”   The Baynanza community event in Florida has taken place every spring, since 1982, and to date two million pounds of trash have been removed from the shorelines.

In port news - the new and improved access to the city centre is nearly complete, a more efficient and environmentally friendly shuttle bus service will soon be available, and the countdown to shoreside power availability has started! OPS is scheduled to be available at the Cherbourg cruise and ferry terminals in 2026. Meanwhile, 2024 is expected to be another significant year for the popular French port, with passenger numbers expected to reach yet another record high. In 2023, the Port of Cherbourg welcomed over 100,000 passengers for the first time, and in 2024, this number is set to reach 120,000. Throughout 2024, the port will welcome 59 cruise ship arrivals, with 12 visits from AIDA, 10 from MSC, and 10 from P&O - making up the anticipated total of 120,000 passengers. The beautiful Seabourn Ovation will call at the port on June 5th, 6th, and 7th as part of the National WWII Museum's 80th anniversary D-Day memorial charter cruise. Ovation's call coincides with the D-Day Festival Normandy which covers the entire coastline of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy - from Pegasus Bridge to Sainte-Mère-Eglise, including Ouistreham, Arromanches, Pointe du Hoc, and, of course, the five iconic sectors of Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach, and Sword Beach. Activities include parachuting, parades, concerts, historical re-enactments, fireworks, exhibitions, and projections. The festival hosts over 100 events and promises to be bigger and better than ever in 2024! “Plans are also in motion to organise a familiarisation (FAM) trip to the Cotentin Peninsula and the Normandy Region," says Julien Bougon, Cherbourg Cruise Manager. Speaking about the region, Bougon adds, "the Cotentin Peninsula is rich with undiscovered shore excursion opportunities. It will be our pleasure to collaborate with our partners and colleagues to explore new locations, exchange ideas, and offer valuable insights into the region's attractions for cruise lines and their passengers." Bougon also reveals, "In 2027, the region will commemorate the 1000th anniversary of William the Conqueror's birth. Plans are already underway to curate an impressive programme of events spanning the wider Normandy region. These events are expected to captivate cruise passengers of all ages." Concluding his statement, Bougon emphasises, "There really is a lot going on at Cherbourg, and I look forward to meeting those interested in learning more about our port, region, and opportunities available during Seatrade Global." Cherbourg Cruise will be exhibiting alongside our colleagues at the French Atlantic Ports stand #1815 (with Cruise Europe). Cruise Port Amsterdam builds energy hub
The construction phase of the energy hub for the Passenger Terminal is progressing steadily, according to Monic van der Heijden, commercial director Cruise Port Amsterdam (PTA). In collaboration with PowerCon and subcontractor BAM Infra, work is currently underway on the foundation, which is expected to be completed by the end of April. The structural construction of the building will begin in May and is anticipated to be finished by mid-July. In June the sea containers, housing the shore power installation for the cruiseships, will be installed inside the building. Simultaneously, from April to September, CPA will also be addressing the cabling under the quayside and beneath the gangways. The shore power installation, which has a capacity to connect one ocean cruiseship and eight river cruise ships, is scheduled for completion as planned in the first quarter 2025. “The availability of shore power, as of 2025, is a major milestone in our ambition and strategy to accommodate emission-free cruising,” concludes Dick de Graaff, managing director CPA. The energy hub is being financed by the Port of Amsterdam.

Harstad’s new quay is in the centre of town
In June 2023 a new quay was inaugurated in Harstad town centre. Built on the site of a previous quay, the 276m-long quay, with a depth of 9.5m, is fully financed by the Port of Harstad (PoH). Prior to this, all the ships docked at Stangnes industrial area, about 10 minutes drive away. The maximum size of ship that can come alongside the new quay is 300m in length, explains Cecilia Henningsen, business developer PoH. “Now we can have two ships of 150m, or one ship over 150m, at the quay.” There were four calls in 2022, 13 last year and 10 are scheduled this year. Of the latter, eight will be visiting for the first time. “Several of the [visiting] captains gave us great feedback on the approach to the quay, about the new quay itself, and its proximity to everything,” says Henningsen. This year, the port is introducing the EPI. “The port wants to actively collect and measure its environmental footprint,” she explains. “Our port wants to contribute with what we can do to facilitate and improve the environment. “This initiative will enhance knowledge and communication and lay the groundwork for a future reward system to incentivise sustainable practices among cruiseship operators. “We are pleased to be able to use this and see how we can work with the EPI system to become even more environmentally-friendly, together with the cruiselines.” For passengers visiting, it is a 150m walk from the quay gate to the centre of Harstad or 50m to the shopping mall, where there are public toilets and free internet access. Discounts are offered to crew in various outlets. Independent travellers can visit the many attractions in the town, explore the archipelago by boat/rib, or explore one of the nearby nature trails. To go further afield taxis and buses are located near to the port. For shore excursions, there is parking for about 12 buses close to the ISPS fences. A wide variety of tours are on offer in the Trondenes Peninsula, including; a medieval farm with a living museum experience; the medieval stone church Trondenes; 1868 sailing schooner Anna Ronde and an Adolf cannon from World War 2. For hikers the most popular mountain is Keipen with stunning views and the possibility of viewing the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Harstad, with a population of 25,000, is open year-round due to its sheltered harbour and is keen to extend its season to showcase the town and surrounds in winter too.
