Word of the chairman

Captain Michael McCarthy
Chairman
Cruise Europe

Matching cruise industry growth and cruise port capacities

Cruise Europe and its more than 100 member ports between Gibraltar in the South, Kirkenes in the North and Lulea in the Baltic still has the potential for growth. Only 75% of the potential cruise ports along the Atlantic coast are members; also one has to include the potential of the cruise ports in Greenland and the area east of the North Cape. The tourist organisations of the ports, the regions, the countries can help as members to make Cruise Europe stronger in marketing the destination Northern Europe to the cruise lines.

The aim for Cruise Europe is to match the ongoing growth of the cruise industry in offering better infrastructure in the member ports, which means more cruise terminals, or to point out the diversity of the many destinations and attractions in Northern Europe.

Cruise Europe has to open a dialogue with the cruise lines with the intention to spread the growing number of cruise ships and the even bigger cruise passenger capacities over more ports, over more cruise areas, over more countries. The success of the Baltic is also possible in the areas of West Europe, of UK & Ireland and of Norway and Iceland. Cruise lines have to be convinced that all four cruise areas in Northern Europe have equal attractions and many good ports to host the growing cruise fleet.

The members of Cruise Europe have to market their cruise area as an attractive cruise destination in its own. To sell just one port to the cruise line does not help. Cruise ports have to work together to form an itinerary, which works for the cruise lines.

Despite the global recession the cruise industry will grow because of the high customer satisfaction. Nowhere customers can find such a perfect holiday: visiting many new destinations, being served with great food in an excellent manner, enjoying state-of-the-art cruise ships with outstanding entertainment, wellness, relaxation and fun. Cruise Europe is part of this cruise product and partner of the cruise lines. Let’s grow with our customers.

Akureyri

Akureyri sits on the shores of Iceland’s longest fjord, Eyjafjordur. It is the country´s second-largest town and the self-proclaimed capital of the North. With a population of just 19,600, there are many things that set Akureyri apart. The nearby Lake Mývatn for example is set in a bewitchingly beautiful area, featuring rock columns, geothermal vents and the popular Mývatn Nature Baths. Located approximately one hour away from the port, Lake Mývatn consistently proves itself to be the most popular shore excursion for cruise passengers visiting Akureyri. Another popular tour is the short flight to Grimsey Island - the only part of Iceland to cross the Arctic Circle. The small island has excellent tourist facilities, an interesting variety of landscapes and is home to a huge bird population during the summer months.

Alesund

Ålesund has a beautiful setting across several islands stretching out into the sea, and is situated at the very entrance of the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Geirangerfjord. Above all Ålesund is internationally renowned for its unique architecture in the Art Nouveau style. The town was devastated by fire on a winter’s night in 1904, laying 850 houses in ashes and leaving 10,000 people homeless. The new Ålesund ‘rose from the ashes’ in the continental turn-of-the-century style with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments.

Aksla, the town mountain, offers breathtaking views across the Art Nouveau town, islands and fjords. The Art Nouveau Centre portrays the unique position Ålesund has in Norwegian architectural history and the Atlantic Sea-Park, one of the largest aquariums in Northern Europe, is located in Ålesund.

Geirangerfjord

The untamed Norwegian landscape and dramatic scenery of the Geirangerfjord has been a magnet for tourists for generations. Every year thousands of visitor's flocks to our beautiful fjord landscape, inscribed on UNESCO List of World Heritage Natural Sites.
As Norway's second largest cruise port, we need to change in line with our customer's needs. To develop the Geirangerfjord as a 21st century tourist destination, a SeaWalk (a floating pier system) was opened in July 2013. This enables cruise passengers to walk directly ashore into Geiranger town center. The SeaWalk develops Geiranger as one of the world's most unique tourist destinations, reduces the environmental impact, and creates a better customer experience. With SeaWalk in Geiranger and Hellesylt Quay, which was opened May 17th, 2012, the two charming villages at each end of Geirangerfjord are well prepared to welcome cruise ships in the years to come.

Isafjordur

Isafjordur has a history of trade and commerce dating back to the 16th century. The port of Isafjordur is close to the most effective fishing grounds in Icelandic and east Greenland waters and is en route of fishing vessels sailing to and from these arctic waters north of Iceland.
The harbor is open 24 hours and all service is available around the clock. Port of Isafjordur has modern harbor facilities including new 190 meters long wharf with 8,0 meters depth at low tide water where vessels can stay off the pier at SW corner 15 mtr. and NA corner 30 mtr. if draft promise.
Although relatively small, Isafjordur is a bustling and widely visited harbor servicing cruise ships and cargo vessels as well as fishing vessels.
Cruise ship arrivals in Isafjordur have been steadily increasing over the last decade or so. In the year 2015, 60 ship calls have already been announced, so the outlook is good. However, we allways welcome more traffic.

Klaksvik

Klaksvik is the second biggest town of the Faroe Island, and the biggest white fish town too. The town is located on Bordoy, which is one of the northernmost islands. Klaksvik is located between two inlets lying back to back. It is an important harbour with fishing industry, and a modern fishing-fleet.

Originally four farms were at the location where Klaksvik is now. By time they grew into four villages that finally merged to what now is called Klaksvik. What really kicked off the development towards a town was the set up af a centralised store for all the northern islands on the location.

The church Christians-kirkjan dates from 1963. Its architecture is unconventional with a detached bell-frame. It is made of Faroese basalt and wood. Inside the church a Faroese rowing boat is hanging down from the ceiling. The font is made af a 4000 years old heathen sacrificial bowl originating from Denmark.

Voted by Nathional Geographic as one of the most appealing destinations in the world, Lofoten is an Arctic island group that has been a cruise destination since 1889. Recent years have seen an annual average of 100 cruise calls as well as expansion into a winter cruise season. The landscape is striking in its variety: wildly beautiful places of marsh and rock, green fields and still lakes, dramatic mountains and white sand beaches.
Lofoten is dotted with picturesque villages and fish-drying racks, as stockfish – dried cod – has been the main export since the Middle Ages. Various national and international publications have named different places in Lofoten “the most beautiful beach in Norway”, “the most beautiful islands in the world” and “the most beautiful view in the world”

Among the special attractions of Oslo are the spectacular Opera House resembling an enormous iceberg, the Viking Ship Museum at Museum Peninsula Bygdoy, housing discoveries from Gokstad, Oseberg and Tune as well as other finds from Viking tombs around the Oslofjord.

Cruise vessels can dock at a great location in the city center.

Patreksfjörður

Patreksfjörður, vivid and charming, is the largest town in the Southern Westfjords. It is predominantly a fishing town with various services and public administrations. The town is rich of commercial and cultural history, the birthplace of many well known Icelandic artists and a base for English, French and German fishermen, merchants and naval mariners in early days. Just a few kilometers outside the town there is an excellent nine hole golf course, as well as many beautiful hiking trails.

The harbor is open 24 hours and all service is available around the clock. Two small ships can be alongside at the same time at the pier of 230 meters in length. All sizes of cruise ships can be accommodated at anchor. It takes tender boats 5 to 10 minutes to reach the port, which is about 10 minutes walk from the town.

Runavik

- Our main port - King's Harbour:
The Port of Runavík, also known as King's Harbour, is situated in the heart of Faroe Islands connected via subsea tunnels to Norðuroyggjar (20 minutes from Runavík to Klaksvík) and to Tórshavn (12 minutes from Runavík to Tórshavn). History tells us that both the King of Denmark and vikings used this harbour, because it was the safest natural harbour in the Faroe Islands.

The port offers good reception facilities with tourist information, Ask Me-staff and free shuttle buses on request. Cruise ships dock at King's Harbour, quaysides 2, 3 and 4. The total length of the quaysides is 567 m with water depths from 5 - 12 m (of which 321 m have a depth of 12 m).

Saudarkrokur

When the buzz of an exciting, new Icelandic port called Saudarkrokur began to surface in late 2018, it soon became apparent that this relatively unknown Icelandic cruise port was definitely one to watch!

Well placed on Iceland’s north coast and in the shelter of the Skagafjordur fjord, Saudarkrokur currently offers one berthing space alongside for cruise vessels up to 200 metres in length, along with two additional anchorages – one 0,5 nm away and the other 0,8 nm away.
Worth noting is that an additional floating tender pier is planned for March 2020 in readiness of the port’s first operational cruise season.

The port is equipped with WiFi and washroom facilities and is 15 minutes walking distance from the Old Town with its museums and quaint streets.
Worth a mention is the ‘Verslun Haraldur Júlíussonar’ - a wonderful, time-traveller style General Store on Adalgata that has been in business since 1919 and where the gas is still pumped by hand.

Seydisfjordur

Seydisfjordur harbour provides an ideal destination for cruise ships. The peaceful village, shaped by Norwegian enterpreneurs over a century ago, lies sheltered by dramatic snow-flecked mountains.

The colorful, Norwegian-style wooden houses render this village unique in Iceland, and walking trails around town, out along the coast, or by the Fjardará River allow for many plesurable and relaxing experiences. Seydisfjördur is distinguished by its close proximity to wild nature – some might even consider it on the verge of the uninhabitable. The climate and its harsh tendencies have shaped those living here.Seydisfjordur is home to approximately 700 residents, who have traditionally lived off fishing. In recent years, however, tourism has growing. Seyðisfjörður is one of Lonely Planet’s top pick in Iceland. A part of Ben Stiller's movie " The secret life of Walter Mitty" was filmed in Seydisfjordur, a YouTube clip from the film can be found here below.

Siglufjordur

Siglufjörður is Iceland’s northenmost town and is a historic fishing town who’s fame and fortune has always been linked to the ebb and flow of the fishing industry. A tiny shark fishing village in 1900, Siglufjörður soon became one of the largest towns in Iceland and the undisputed capital of herring fishing in the Atlantic. Although the herring has disappeared, the town bears the distinct imprint of “The Herring Era”.
Siglufjörður is along with the community of Ólafsfjörður a part of The Municipality of Fjallabyggð, which came into being when the two communities were merged in 2006. The area maintains a flourishing cultural activity and is known for its dynamic and vibrant extracurricular activities. There are interesting galleries and artist studios to be visited in town.
Since 2002 Siglufjörður has welcomed cruise ship passengers to visit this small town at the edge of North Iceland that is full of well kept history.

Trondheim

Trondheim was founded by Viking King Olav Trygvason in AD 997 and occupies a special place in Norwegian history and culture. It was the nation’s first capital and is today the third largest city in Norway with around 185 000 inhabitants.

Trondheim is surrounded by lovely forested hills, and the Nidelven River winds through the city. The charming old streets at Bakklandet bring you back to architectural traditions and the atmosphere of days gone by. It has been, and still is, a popular pilgrimage site, due to the famous Nidaros Cathedral which is incorporated in the official European Cultural Routes on the same terms as Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Trondheim is also an ecclesiastical centre, a regional capital, a centre for commerce and administration – and, last but not least, a city of education and research.

Choose between a rich variety of historical sights, museums and art galleries - and look forward to an unforgettable experience.

The Cruise Europe Port Handbook

Cruise Europe has 120 members in Northern and Atlantic Europe, in a geographical spread from Lisbon - Iceland - North Cape and St. Petersburg.
Our four very different regions offer a diversity of experiences as to history, culture and events.

White nights in the north, hot sunny days in the south. Very old and new exciting architecture as well as very old and new exciting art.
Museums where the guest can get an insight into all aspects of Europe's history, traditions, handicrafts and present day life. All regions give the guest an opportunity to feel the beat of the European cities, shop for the unique design of that special area and savour the national food and drink of the countries where the ships dock.

Nature in Europe is everything from pristine meadows to busy beaches, great coast lines, fjords and islands, walks in birch woods or cypress groves and well-kept golf courses - each with its own characteristic.

Cruising Europe is a movable feast and has become a popular destination over the past decade - there is still a lot to be discovered. Europe is no longer only a summer destination. Cruise lines visit our ports all year.
Christmas markets around Europe have become popular events that attract cruise calls, and the number of winter cruises looking for the northern light have increased dramatically the last few years.

Europe is a region with good infrastructure. Our members keep investing in piers, terminals, waste reception facilities and new shore tours. Every month we bring the broader cruise industry news of port developments or new infrastructure up and down our region.

In a world of geopolitical challenges, it's fair to say that Europe is politically stable.
The lines are not likely to face massive disruption to their itineraries in our region due to political issues if they decide to deploy their vessels in Northern & Atlantic Europe.

The Cruise Europe website and port handbook will give you a good general overview and a deeper insight into all the possibilities and temptations of Cruise Europe's unique destinations.

The key thing is that it can be updated regularly. The cruise lines can choose a region, a country or an itinerary. By choosing this way of presenting our wonderful region we have modern tool for the benefit of the cruise lines.

After all, that is what Cruise Europe is all about. Bringing the members and the cruise lines together.
