Destination Information
Estonia is situated in Northern Europe, on the coast of the Baltic Sea, bordered to the north by Finland, to the west by Sweden, and to the south by Latvia. Estonia is best known for its beautiful capital, Tallinn, which is the oldest capital city in Northern Europe.
Tallinn’s marvellous Old Town is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The unique value of Tallinn’s Old Town lies primarily in the well-preserved completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been lost in most other northern capitals. The web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, dating from the 11th to 15th centuries, has been preserved nearly in its entirety.
All the most important state and church buildings from the Middle Ages have retained their basic original form, along with many citizens’ and merchants’ residences, barns, and warehouses from the medieval period.
