1st French port for external trade & containers traffic, Le Havre is the gateway between the North-Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The port of Le Havre is accessible 24/24 and has the capacity to host the biggest cruises ships.

In 2012, 110 calls are scheduled (215 000 pax). The Cruise Terminal has fully-equipped turnaround facilities, with check-in counters, a baggage handling area and a baggage scanner. Since 2011 Costa Cruises operates regular turnarounds from Le Havre during the summer season on a Northern Europe itinerary. In 2012 Cunard has set one partial turnaround starting for a world voyage on Queen Elizabeth and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line 3 departures bound for Norway. Oceania Cruise and Windstar Cruises also use Le Havre’s Cruise Terminal turnaround facilities.

The Greater Le Havre Tourist Office operates the Cruise Terminal and it is in charge of developing and promoting cruise activity under the trade mark “Le Havre, the Gateway to Paris, in cooperation with the Port Authority.

Le Havre clocks up 10 overnight calls this year

Le Havre is expecting 10 overnight calls this season out of the total 110 booked which is one up on the nine reported in January 2012.

Of the 21 cruise lines visiting, AIDA Cruises and Costa Cruises have more than 20 calls while Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises have 12 calls each.

Costa Cruises’ Costa NeoRomantica, Royal Caribbean International’s Brilliance of the Seas, Oceania Cruises’ Nautica and Windstar Cruises’ Wind Spirit will all operate turnarounds bound for either the European capitals or the Norwegin fjords.

Le Havre has Christmas cruises and an extended season in its sights

Le Havre has six calls booked this Christmas compared to one last year and the port is keen to not only attract more of these calls but extend the cruise season.

Valerie Dubuc, cruise director Cruise Le Havre, says: “One of our goals is to extend our cruise season throughout the year. I think there is a great potential for Christmas cruises. 

The port is preparing an entertainment programme at the Cruise Terminal which includes mulled wine and hot chocolate. This December P&O Cruises’ Arcadia will call four times, Oriana once and Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 once.

Cruise Europe is about partnerships of many kinds

In 1996 when Norway (ex France) sailed into Le Havre waiting on the quayside was Gilbert Conan who was then with Humann & Taconet and was the shipping agent who arranged her call. Also involved with her arrival was Valerie Dubuc, cruise coordinator for Le Havre Tourist Office, and a well-known and active member of Cruise Europe.
