Helsingor (Elsinore) is investing E3m-4m in a new quay which is due to be completed July 2011. Able to accommodate all types of ships, its position is “unique for small cruiseships” and is five minutes’ slow walk from the city centre, according to Jan Hjort Christensen of Helsingor Havne.
This year Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 called Helsingor - and Denmark - for the first time, and the quay was used for tendering. The quay is 142m long and has a draught of 6.8m but this is being increased by 0.5m for next year and the width of the quay will also be increased to 30m.
In 2009 the Danish port received two calls, both at anchorage, with five already booked for 2011. Anchorage is 0.5nm south east of the port and the turning basin has a 200-250m diameter and draught of 6.8m. Waste water and recycling facilities are available but there is no passenger terminal.
The quay is part of a much larger E40m project named Kulturhavn Kronborg which is due for completion in May 2012. This is being run by The Danish Castle Administration (Slots og Ejendomsstyrelsen), Real-Dania Fond and Elsinore Municipality.
