Liverpool is planning a second cruise terminal specifically for turnarounds as part of a £5.5bn (E6.6bn) Liverpool Waters development led by Peel Holdings. The development will make use of a series of presently derelict dock spaces at Central Docks, many of which are in a World Heritage site.
The development is planned to create at least 17,000 full time jobs and 21m ft2 of new commercial and residential floor spaces including apartments and hotels. The work is due to start in 2011 and will take 50 years to complete.
In 2007 the £20m (E24m) Liverpool Cruise Terminal in the heart of the World Heritage site at Pier Head and minutes from the city centre was opened. The maximum size of vessel that can dock has a length of 380m and draught of 10.2m. Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2 has visited.
This year the UK port is expecting 16 calls and 23,974 passengers compared with 14 calls and 22,074 passengers in 2009. Fred Olsen Cruise Lines' Boudicca made five turnaround calls at the port this year following Black Prince's retirement in 2009. She will do the same again in 2011.
Liverpool is planning for the arrival of Queen Victoria on July 26 when over 60,000 spectators are expected at the waterfront to welcome the Cunard Line ship.
