Disney Cruise Line Set to Call on the Port of Dover for the First Time

Submitted by Dover on 9 June 2010 - 3:10pm

12-Night itineraries include calls to Scandinavia, Germany and Russia

DOVER, England (June 8, 2010) – The Disney Magic cruise ship will call on the Port of Dover for the first time, as part of an extended season of special Mediterranean and Northern European itineraries, the latest example of Disney’s global expansion in the family cruising market. Beginning Saturday, June 12, the ship will sail four, 12-night cruises round-trip from Dover to ports in Scandinavia, Germany and Russia, providing families with a unique way to see world-famous cities throughout Europe.

“We are thrilled to begin this new itinerary, and call the Port of Dover our home for the next few weeks.” said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “This region of the world holds great appeal and we are very excited to finally give our guests the opportunity to combine an authentic Northern European experience with a fun, family-friendly cruise that only Disney can deliver.”

Disney’s Northern European itineraries are part of an extended season of cruises in both the Baltic and Mediterranean regions.

“We are delighted to welcome the Disney Magic for its first call at the Port of Dover,” said Kate O’Hara, Head of Commercial and Marketing at the Port of Dover. “It is fitting that such a globally iconic brand should have an equally iconic location, against a backdrop of the famous White Cliffs. So begins, what we hope will be, a magical relationship with Dover, the Port of Kings.”

Port of Dover

With the backdrop of the stunning White Cliffs and nearby world-famous city of London, Dover boasts the perfect embarkation port for a Northern European cruise itinerary. Additionally, the city of London provides guests with a variety of options to explore. Combined with Disney’s pre- and post-night stay options, guests have a wonderful opportunity to see the historic and well-known attractions throughout the city.

First-Call Ceremony Events

As is tradition within the cruise industry, Captain John Barwis and shipboard officers will host port officials and community leaders onboard the Disney Magic during the first call to exchange maritime plaques. Events aboard the Disney Magic’s first Northern European itinerary are scheduled for 11:00am local time, for the following ports:

Saturday, June 12 – Dover, England Saturday, June 19 – St. Petersburg, Russia

Monday, June 14 – Oslo, Norway Sunday, June 20 – Helsinki, Finland

Tuesday, June 15 – Copenhagen, Denmark *Monday, June 21 – Stockholm, Sweden

Wednesday, June 16 – Warnemünde, Germany Friday, July 2 – Tallinn, Estonia

*Denotes onboard ceremony begins at 10:00am, not 11:00am.

Itinerary Details

Book-ending the Northern European cruises are 10- and 11-night Mediterranean itineraries. Disney Cruise Line first sailed the Mediterranean region during the summer of 2007. The feedback from guests proved very popular, prompting the company to once again explore this region of the world, while adding even more itinerary options for guests with a Northern European cruise.

The Disney Magic will arrive in Dover as part of a seven-night reposition cruise from Barcelona. Departing Dover round-trip, the 12-night cruises will sail to Oslo, Norway; Copenhagen, Denmark; Warnemünde, Germany; St. Petersburg, Russia; Helsinki, Finland or Tallinn, Estonia and Stockholm, Sweden.
