Extending the berthing potential at Douglas, Isle of Man, to enhance the existing infrastructure is under discussion although it is too early to provide any details according to Terry Toohey, cruise consultant Isle of Man department of tourism and leisure.
At present the maximum size of ship able to come alongside has a length of 156m and a draught of 6.5m, although tidal restrictions may apply.
There are two piers but all vessels over 156m in length have to anchor about half a mile from the new cruise vessel pontoon which is an eight minute tender ride away. There were seven calls and 3,786 passengers in 2009 with 13 calls and 6,310 passengers forecast for 2010.
There will be three new companies calling next year including ResidenSea with The World. The season begins April/May and ends September/October.
