The city of Hamburg saw last weekend devoted to the Carnival of Venice. The christening of the “MSC Magnifica” by ship’s ‘godmother’ Sophia Loren on 6 March was marked by a breath-taking Italian show.
Calls to the Firth of Forth, Scotland, numbered 64 carrying about 60,000 passengers in 2009 of which seven were turnarounds. For 2010 the forecast is for similar numbers.
March 2011 will see the completion of a new quay at Leixoes, Portugal, enabling ships up to 300m long and 10m draught to come alongside.
The organization of The Tall Ships Races in Aalborg is currently receiving new registrations from ships which are going to participate in The Tall Ships Races 2010.
They come from all over the world. Indonesia, England, Russia, Poland, Holland and Oman are just some of the countries sending sailing ships to Aalborg.
The City of Aalborg has applied for and received a promise that it can raise a loan of 200 million kroner for building projects. The local authority has decided to spend 38 million kroner on the renovation of the waterfronts in Aalborg and Nørresundby.
2009 proved to be a record year for the Port of Cork with a total of 54 cruise liners calling to Cobh, Ireland’s only dedicated cruise berth.
Queen Mary II arrived on her maiden call to Cobh on Wednesday 21st October.
Rotterdam, The Netherlands, will be the first port of call for Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic as she sets sail on her maiden voyage in June.
Copenhagen City Council has given the go-ahead for a new cruiseship quay for completion in time for the 2013 season.
The Queen of Norwegian Fjords, Hardangerfjord, will offer all the cruise passengers a renewed mega attraction with the majestic Hardanger Bridge, Norway’s longest suspension bridge.
The most popular shore excursion in Hardanger is to Norway’s best visited natural tourist attraction, Voringfoss waterfall in Eidfjord.
Alesund in Norway will be able to handle two of the larger cruiseships at the same time and the same place come 2012.
Hafnarfjordur in Iceland is expecting 13 calls this year of which five will be turnarounds.
