Visby has plans to build a new 150m-long quay south of the port with a depth of 11.5m. Total length with dolphins will be 550m. This will make it possible for larger cruiseships to visit with two able to dock simultaneously.
Approval has yet to be given to go ahead with the project but all being well work would start summer 2012 and it will be ready for the 2013 cruise season. The cost is estimated at SKr 100m to 200m (E10.9m to E21.7m) but it is hoped that 40% will come through grants and that 70% of cost will be recouped by port charges over time.
Visby has seen passenger numbers rise by 44% this year on last, 52,067 (66 calls) up on 36,005 (52 calls). Seabourn Sojourn was a newcomer to the port this year. For 2011 29 calls and 44,321 passengers are expected so far.
There are five quays available for cruiseships ranging in size from 110m in length and 5.5m depth to 200m length and 7.2m depth. The walk to the city centre is between five and 15 minutes.
The maximum size of cruiseship that can be accommodated at the port is 206m (at anchor) and 200m alongside. Although there is no passenger terminal, about 4,000 passengers can be handled at one time.
Berths no 4 and 7 have waste water and recycling facilities available.
