September and October have been extraordinary months for Vigo with calls reaching 19 and 15 respectively, passenger numbers 40,000 and 42,500 and crew numbers 15,700 and 17,000.

On September 10 and 11 there were consecutive triple calls with the port handling 16,500 visitors from Costa Pacifica, Celebrity Constellation, Wind Surf, MSC Opera, MSC Orchestra and Costa Mediterranea.

The Spanish port is proud to be the first and last Cruise Europe port of call on Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas first trip to Europe. She arrived on September 27 along with Celebrity Infinity which resulted in Vigo hosting 12,000 visitors on a single day. Passengers were treated to cultural events and traditional music performed by bagpipe bands such as Xarabal as well as a final balloon launch.

The two terminals with 1,000m of quay in the city centre provides easy access to the old town and promenades.Independent studies from the University of Vigo estimated an economic return of the double call of over E700,000 for the city. The second call was on October 18. Royal Caribbean has placed more than 100 calls to the port and next year newcomer Anthem of the Seas will visit as well as Explorer of the Seas.

Present at the second call of Oasis on October 18 were representatives from the Port of Lisbon who witnessed the berthing, embarking and disembarking procedures and security arrangements as well as visited the ship. A subsequent meeting of the two ports has laid the foundations for an agreement to promote Atlantic European cruise traffic.

From September passengers have been able to visit a new commemorative garden next to the main cruise terminal. It pays tribute to the Vigo’s position as a connecting point of the submarine telegraph cable which served as a link between the five continents.
