Turku focuses on the environment

Environmental work at the Port of Turku focuses on water protection in the Baltic Sea, reduction of emissions into air and improvement of energy-efficiency. Since 2006 it has been applying environmental port charges as one of only a few ports in Finland. Since 2015 the amount of discount has been bound to the nitrogen oxide emissions of the vessel.

The discounts based on environmental impacts are also applied in waste management.
For a number of years the port has collected wastewater from cruise vessels free of charge, and this will continue in 2018, too. Three new wastewater reception points for cruise vessels and cargoships were completed in 2016 ensuring sufficient reception capacity from all vessels calling Turku.

A certified environmental system is in place at the port which keeps developing its own operations towards greener shipping. The port is currently a partner in the EU-supported project NextGen Link, which aims to upgrade the maritime link between Turku and Stockholm.

The Port of Turku will invest in an automooring system and infrastructure to accommodate Viking Line’s new vessel running on LNG. The project will be completed in summer 2020.
