Turku city berth up and running

Submitted by CE-Press on 15 June 2010 - 1:59pm

Turku is expecting eight calls and 3,000 passengers this year as it did last. In 2009 the Finnish port opened an upgraded berth, no 10, for cruiseships. It is at the mouth of the River Aura and near to Turku Castle and the city centre. It is 100m long and has a depth of 8m but has already accommodated 139m-long Spirit of Adventure.

There are five berths in total with depths ranging from 6.5m to 11m. Alongside the maximum length that can be accommodated is 230m, with a draught of 10m, because of the incoming channel, explains Kari Riutta, harbour master Port of Turku.

Anchorage is available at the Airisto roads which are about 25 minutes’ tender ride from the city centre. However buses can be sent to Ruissalo Island which reduces the tender time to 10 minutes, explains Riutta.

Free shuttle buses are offered from the berths that are 3km from the city centre. Waste water is handled by trucks free of charge and there are waste stations in the port area.

There are two passenger terminals but these are for the regular Turku to Stockholm ferry service which carries 3.6m passengers annually.
