Work has begun on building the new 200 t bollard at 240m west of the cruise quay in Trondheim. It is due to be completed this summer and will allow vessels of up to 360m in length to come alongside. At present the longest vessel that has been docked is 345m.

“The new bollard will improve mooring of the longer vessels significantly,” explained Maria Kuhnl, cruise coordinator Trondheim Port Authority, whilst adding: “Despite the current project there is always room for further improvements.”

A roundabout for excursion buses is also being installed which will make it possible to park 20, five more than presently, within the ISPS area.

MSC Meraviglia called for the first time on Norways’ National Day in May and will visit twice more this year. To cater to the visiting passengers, two museums were opened for the first time on this important day. In addition kindergarten children had drawn flags for the passengers, which were handed out in the morning together with free chocolates and maps of the city.

Kuhnl, said: “The call was a good test for us in handling both a giant in size and a giant in numbers of people. We had been preparing for this call for quite some time and can happily say that everything went smoothly.”
