The expansion project in Port of Torshavn began on February 6 when the barge, Siri, started to transport material from the quarry, about 1nm from the new pier. A second barge has now been employed to speed up the process.
Annfinn Hjelm, marketing manager Torshavn Port, commented: “We will eventually be able to service our customers much better, both in terms of accommodating larger cruiseships, avoiding the current congestion issues, and to separate our cargo operations from passenger operations “.
Harbour master Jonsvein Lamhauges added: “Even though the building period will stretch over a couple of years, with this project we will future-proof the port’s operations for the next many years”.
