Together with Economics Senator Ian Karan, Altona’s District Mayor Jürgen Warmke-Rose opened the ceremony for the topping-out of the new cruise terminal in Altona. Special thanks were expressed to the project developer, the municipal company Fischereihafenentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG [Fishing Port Development Co. Ltd.], and of course to the entire workforce involved in the project.
‘The cruise boom at the Port of Hamburg continues unabated. By the end of June fifty-eight cruise ships, with a total of more than 150,000 passengers, had put in to the port – twice as many as in the same period last year,’ the Economics Senator announced.
The quay wall was already completed last year. Since then ships have been received at the Altona cruise terminal on a provisional basis, even while construction operations were still under way.
‘This shows what an urgent need we have for the new cruise terminal,’ said Economics Senator Ian Karan. ‘The trend of cruisers putting in to Hamburg is extremely positive and sustainable. With more than 100 arrivals and up to 240,000 passengers expected in 2010, this should be the best cruise year for Hamburg to date, as the figures continue to rise.’
The project stayed within the 30 million euro municipal budget provided for construction of the terminal and surrounding areas together with the quay walls and the basin.
