Disney Cruise Line, Iberocruceros and Cruise & Maritime Voyages are calling the west Atlantic port of Cherbourg in France for the first time this year. The port is expecting 25 calls and about 40,000 passengers which compares with 25 calls and 43,045 passengers in 2009, according to Caroline Pulido Bonnissent of Cherbourg Tourist Office.
These numbers are a significant increase on 2007 when the port received 16 calls and 27,891 passengers rising to 28 calls and 31,043 passengers in 2008.
The port has two quays with a total berth length of 700m with the maximum draught being 12m and no restrictions on air draught. There is a passenger terminal, tourist information, public telephones, shops, restaurants, toilets, post office, and taxis all available at the pier. It is only half a kilometre into the city centre and a shuttle bus is available for passengers.
Anchorage is available but only if there are too many vessels in port which has not been necessary to date, says Ms Bonnissent.
