Successful visit of Tall Ships into Greenock

Submitted by Greenock Glasgow on 15 July 2011 - 12:53pm

The Tall Ships Races have completed a successful visit to Greenock, which saw thousands of visitors enjoy the wide range of entertainment and activities on offer against the spectacular backdrop of the Tall Ships.

The activities took place from Saturday 9th until Tuesday 12th, and throughout this period there were several standout events, including performances by Deacon Blue, Lulu and the Magic Numbers, as well as parades through the town and an impressive fireworks display.

A spectacular Red Arrows display took place on Tuesday morning, which was a prelude to the final event of the races, the Parade of Sail, when the Tall Ships made their way from the docks and departed for the next leg of the Races.

The Parade of Sail was enhanced by the visit of the luxury cruise ship Europa, which called into Greenock Ocean Terminal as part of its tour around the UK. Passengers aboard the ship were able to explore the attractions in the surrounding areas in the morning, before returning to the vessel and witnessing the Red Arrows display and become part of the Parade of Sail, which will have given the passengers a special memory of their visit to Greenock.

To celebrate the visit of the Tall Ships, Clydeport launched a photography competition for photographs of any of the Tall Ships events. There are two categories for entrants: Children - Up to 12 years old and Adult - 13 years old and above and the winners of each category will receive a cash prize of £250. Entries for the competition can be submitted to tallships [at] clydeport [dot] co [dot] uk and full terms and conditions can be found on the website www.clydeport.co.uk.
