Facing the approaching regulations for dumping of waste in the Baltic Sea – Marpol Annex IV - implemented from 2019 and 2021, Skagen is investing in port reception facilities (PRF) for black and grey water.

The facility will be operational from June this year, having six shore connections at Cruise Quay 9 and two shore connections at Pier 10. Discharge is directly to the municipal sewage system via a 600m3 tank. In order to comply with the demands from the cruiselines the capacity of the PRF for wastewater will be 300m3 an hour.

“We are looking forward to improve our services as we believe that these new services will be of great importance to the cruiselines,” commented Willy Hansen, chief executive officer Port of Skagen.

During June and July 2015 in Skagen GP Wild (International)/BREA conducted a survey on 471 passengers visiting on satisfaction and spendings. Of these 70% were from the UK, 20% from USA and 10% from other countries, mainly Australia and Canada. The average cruise passenger visiting Skagen was about 58 years of age with an average household income of E70,200. Each passenger spent on average E62.35. With 19,394 going ashore, this totalled E1.2m.

In terms of passenger satisfaction, 91% felt that their visit to Skagen met or exceeded their expectations and were very satisfied with their overall visit. The highest scoring were: tour guides 91%; historic sites and museums 93%; courtesy of store employees 99%; friendliness of residents 99%; local transportation 93% and overall shopping experience 94%.

“We are very pleased with the results of the survey, and we continue to work on destination developments in order to increase the passenger satisfaction,” said Anne Sofie Ronne Jensen, cruise manager.

On February 12, HRH Queen Margrethe II of Denmark inaugurated the Skagens Museum following the completion of a two-year extension and renovation project. The museum now meets international standards and yet it remains true to the spirit of the original design by Danish architect Ulrik Plesner.
