Although waste can be collected by truck from the two berths catering to cruiseships, there is authorisation to offload the sewage on the next day when calling Tallinn at no extra cost.
The maximum volume in Saaremaa is 18m3 a day which goes to the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Kuressaare 45km from the port. Up to 7m3 comes under the waste fee but, for quantities in excess of this, payment will be made additionally in accordance with the quantities actually discharged.
The reason for there being insufficient facilities arises from the low number of calls, Saaremaa Harbour’s remote location, the distance to the treatment plant and the harbour being situated in Natura 2000 area. There are no plans to build extra facilities.
