The renovation and expansion of Cruise Terminal Rotterdam built in 1947 is underway with no inconvenience being caused to visiting passengers, according to senior terminal manager Port of Rotterdam Cees Scherpenisse and architect/project manager Cleo Hupkes.

The joint project of the port and municipality of Rotterdam includes an indoor luggage space, a new boarding bridge from Adelte and a ‘wave goodbye’ terrace.

Hupkes commented: “Our goal is to have everything up-to-date for the upcoming decade. And I mean everything including terminal, quay, logistics and also we want to be ready to welcome even more passenger ships in the future.”

Scherpenisse explained: “We will have a truly magnificent quay. And the great thing is that we get to stay open during renovation. In fact, passengers have no idea what is going on.”

If there are no cruiseships in ports, work is performed day and night in order to have, for example, the boarding bridge completed. By the time Royal Caribbean International’s Oasis of the Seas calls on September 30, significant progress will have been made but it the project is due to be completed later in the year.
