Pullmantur will use Trondheim as a turnaround port for Empress in 2012 and 2013.
The Spanish operator has decided to try out the operation on four calls both years. This will involve about 1,800 passengers each time.
The port says that if the operation is a success, Pulmmantur will expand the turnaround activity to up to 25,000 passengers a year.
Additional signage has been put up to guide passengers to the city centre.
The harbour is undergoing major development. Next year Scandinavia’s largest conference hotel will open in April. A pedestrian bridge linking the harbour and the city centre will be completed in 2013, reducing the walk by 600m.
In 2015 new office buildings will be completed near the waterfront with the possibility of opening shops and cafes on the ground floors.
Quay 68 can take vessels over 350m and has accommodated Cunard Line’s Queen Mary 2. Quay 30 has a length of 156m and depth of 8m.
This year there were 40 calls and 43,601 passengers. Next year the numbers are expected to reach 54 and about 78,758 respectively.
