The Port of Leixões is in the top three ports around the world, according to the Seatrade Cruise Awards, which were announced on Wednesday, September 9, in Hamburg, Germany.
On this year's edition, the nominees for the Port of the Year were the Port of Leixões, the Port of San Francisco and the Passenger Terminal of Amsterdam. The Port of the Year Award aims to distinguish a port authority or a port management, which has made significant improvements to its handling facilities or cruise tourism infrastructure over the past 12 months.
"Despite the fact that the big winner of 2015 has been the Passenger Terminal of Amsterdam, we are very pleased to be on the short list of the top three ports in the world and we have no doubt that, in 2016, with the dynamics of the new Porto Cruise Terminal, the award will be ours, "said Mr. Brògueira Dias, the President of APDL – Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo.
The recently opened Porto Cruise Terminal is the most important investment of this Port Authority aiming to boost the cruise tourism in the North of Portugal Region, enhancing Leixões as a cruise port.
Judged by an independent panel of experienced cruise industry specialists, the Seatrade Cruise Awards are one of the highest accolades in the cruise industry and distinguish every year, the world's best ports in 8 different categories, namely the Destination of the Year, the Port of the Year, the Supplier of the Year, the Environmental Initiative of the Year, the Innovative Shorex of the Year and also the Seatrade Cruise Personality of the Year, the Seatrade Lifetime Achievement award for Services to Cruising and the Seatrade Outstanding Achievement Award.
