Kristiansand is expecting 31,700 passengers this year compared to 24,000 in 2009, a significant rise. Calls will number 20 this year compared to 16 last year.
There are plans in the pipeline to move the cargo/container traffic away from the city centre and to redesign the whole port area although it is not yet known when these can be realised according to Randi Haukom, destination manager Kristiansand Tourist Office.
At present there are four berths for cruiseships although none of them are dedicated. The maximum size of vessel that come alongside is 317m in length with an almost unlimited turning circle.
The piers are all within walking distance of the city centre but there is also a shuttle miniature train for a small cost.
Construction of a new theatre and concert hall is already underway for completion in 2011. Situated close to the main cruise pier, the plan is to put on concerts for passengers when it is finished.
The Norwegian port has both waste water and recycling facilities available but both have to be ordered in advance.
