The Port of Parnu has been preparing itself for cruiseship calls so that it can deliver its promise when taking bookings.

On January 7 it signed a contract with Jan De Nul Group for the further deepening of the access channel. The works which will begin on July 15 and be completed by November consist of dredging from the current 6m to 7.2m in order to cater to cruiseships.

“Bringing cruiseships to romantic Parnu has been my little while dream since Estonia regained its independence in 1991. And now I can say that this is another step closer to fulfilling that dream. I have already made a deal with the mayor of Parnu that he will greet every ship himself and with a city orchestra,” said Rein Kilk, chairman of the supervisory board Port of Parnu.

The port is also in the latter stages of renewing its port rules including dues for cruiseships as well as reviewing Parnu County tours to make sure they are attractive to cruiseships.

Sander Kilk, member of the board Port of Parnu, explained that the port wanted to have everything ready by the time it attended Cruise Shipping Miami. “We can start making agreements with cruiselines and we don’t have to worry if we can keep our word. Right now we have been contacted by various agent companies wanting to bring cruiseships but everything has been put on hold until we are ready with everything.”
