A large increase in passenger numbers to North Cape (Honningsvaag) in the last couple of years has lead the port to invest in a new cruise pier. Construction begins this month and completion is due for the 2011 cruise season.
The pier will have a length of 134m and depth of 12m allowing vessels of 300m in length to tie up alongside. It will include two hydraulic capstone pullers, each with a capacity of 250t.
As well as allowing for larger cruiseships, it will also mean the port will be able to handle the ships more safely in rough weather conditions. In addition passengers will be closer to the city centre when they disembark.
The community has come together in the form of a local cruise network recognising the advantages of working as one to market and develop The North Cape region as a cruise destination.
