North Cape begins turnarounds in June 2015 when Pullmantur calls

North Cape Turnaround Port has its first ‘live’ booking from Pullmantur on June 6 2015 when Empress will call, to be followed by a second on June 20. In July the port got its first booking for 2016, also from Pullmantur and with the same ship.

Securing these homeport calls has come about due to the port ordering the Seawalk XT-version of the floating pier from Cruise Venture in early July. It will be ready for delivery early May 2015.

Luggage handling will take place on SeaWalk using ATVs (quad bikes) with 40 purpose-built trolleys to ensure efficient and fast transfer of up to 5,000 pieces of luggage. A 10,000m2 parking space has been constructed to provide adequate space for semi-trailers and up to 25 buses.

Pullmantur has already used SeaWalks located in Skjolden and Geiranger but this will be the first use of the XT version which is designed to handle both passengers and luggage.

In addition an old warehouse is being transformed into a 480m2 terminal with 16 check-in desks showcasing northern Norway’s coastal heritage. Old ropes, nets and fishing gear will give the tourists an impression of the coastal environment.

The port is now focusing on challenges such as electricity and broadband which should be up and running by October/November. A Sami herdsmen tent, ‘Lavvus’, will also be set up near the terminal to reinforce North Cape’s reputation as the ‘Gateway to Sami’. This will house a Tourist Information office and give space for souvenir sales.

As far as shore excursions are concerned there are several companies in Porsanger and Karasjok working on quality assurance ahead of the planned tourism growth. Some of the new tours will be ready during late autumn/early winter in order for introductory sales to begin.

The port is also working on getting winter calls with one booked this year and three next from Cruise & Maritime Voyages’ Marco Polo and Voyager. A snow mobile excursion to spend a night at North Cape is under development.
