New quayside completed at Runavik

The handover of Port of Runavik’s new extended quayside in May 2018 has marked the completion of a new facility and new opportunities for the Port of Runavik.

The total alongside is now about 580m with a depth of 12m along 320m thereof. Four 200t bollards have been added to the existing four 75t and 15 or so 50t bollards. There are no height restrictions. Bunkering, garbage disposal, potable water services are available.

The port is now able to welcome all sizes of cruiseships. Seabourn Quest and Ocean Endeavour called the new quay in June with Mein Schiff 3 and Zuiderdam calling in July and August.

Also known as the King’s Harbour, Runavik is situated at the heart of the Faroes. It is a natural harbour shaped by nature in ancient times. Even before the Danish King started to visit, the Vikings used the harbour as it was considered the safest in the region, explained Rannva Troest, cruise representative Port of Runavik.

On the pier is a tourist information kiosk and public toilets. Within five minutes’ are bank and exchange facilities and a post office. The port and Visit Runavik offer free shuttle buses on request. Maps and programmes are handed out on the pier and at the new and enlarged Visit Runavik centre in town. As an extra service, ‘Ask Me’ staff will be scattered around the town ready to help out and point passengers in the right direction.

Together with Runavik municipality and the local tourist office, the port puts on a special event to welcome passengers from each cruiseship calling. Locals, wearing national costume, perform traditional dancing and singing. All passengers are invited hear the story of, and join in, the Faroese chain dance.

There is a wide choice of excursions, either individually or on organised coach tours, provided by experienced operators and accompanied by multilingual guides. These include unwinding with the locals in small villages; mountain hiking; shopping for Faroese handicraft and woolwear; knitting with a local, art exhibitions etc.
