On August 12, Holland America Line’s 55,575gt Maasdam came alongside Falmouth, UK. She is the largest ship to have called the port so far.
Ships over 100,000gt are regular callers but passengers have to tender ashore.
Maasdam passengers disembarked next to the RFA Argus where filming of ‘World War Z’, starring Brad Pitt, was taking place.
A complimentary shuttle bus service to the town was provided by the port and local business community. Falmouth port ambassadors provided passengers with information on the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Sailing Regatta races and shoreside activities which was in full swing.
Keith Collings, a port ambassador, said: “The majority of passengers chose to take one of the 13 coach tours to explore the wider area and to visit some of Cornwall’s leading attractions.” These include the Lost Gardens of Heligan, St Michael’s Mount and The Eden Project.
The port of Falmouth is currently working with local businesses on providing a greater variety of shore excursions including Cornish cream teas at the Halwyn Tea Garden - where Winston Churchill and President Eisenhower planned D-Day and watched the fleet assemble in the River Fal - and group walking treks to places of historical interest.
