The consortium - Global Liman Isletmeleri (40%), Grupo Sousa Investimentos (30%), Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (20%) and Creuers del Port de Barcelona(10%) - with the concession to build and operate a new terminal at Santa Apolonia in Lisbon, Portugal, is being analysed by the competition authority with the hope that contracts will be signed in May.

It is estimated that the terminal will take 24 months to build and will enable increased numbers of turnaround calls.

The 35-year concession will be in the Santa Apolonia area, and will include the existing terminal buildings. The 1940s listed terminals, Alcantara and Rocha Conde de Obidos, can be used on days when the port is congested.

This year year 336 calls and 520,000 passengers are expected compared to 353 and 558,000 respectively in 2013. The reduction in numbers this year is partly due to calls in January being cancelled due to poor weather in the UK.
